The benchmark is located within the fenced area of the Arkansas & Missouri Railroad maintenance yard and visible from Ballman Road, which borders to the northwest. The marker is on a concrete pylon (painted safety orange at the time of this writing) on the southwest edge of a ditch located between the railroad sidings and the fence.

Out doing a little benchmarking with BasicPoke and grabbed this one.

Found this one today after work thanks to Secondgunman's cords. and well worded log.

The mark is still there, but the description isn't great and the posted coordinates are way off. Unfortunately, there's really not much here to use as a reference. There are tracks on both sides of Ballman road, which confuses things a bit. The mark is about 10 feet north of the track ON THE SOUTH SIDE OF BALLMAN ROAD.

Was in Fort Smith today for business and decided to go and finally photo document this benchmark. The mark is in good shape the cement pedestal is firmly in place. Erosion has taken some base material from around the pedestal. The mark is easily readable as can be seen in the photo.

Control Text

  • The horizontal coordinates were scaled from a topographic map and have an estimated accuracy of +/- 6 seconds.
  • The orthometric height was determined by differential leveling and adjusted by the National Geodetic Survey in June 1991.
  • The geoid height was determined by GEOID99.
  • The dynamic height is computed by dividing the NAVD 88 geopotential number by the normal gravity value computed on the Geodetic Reference System of 1980 (GRS 80) ellipsoid at 45 degrees latitude (G = 980.6199 gals.).
  • The modeled gravity was interpolated from observed gravity values.
