Probably just about everybody has seen this one and not known it. Ran into another cacher (Judy, jffok) at this site. The benchmark is in good shape as previously described. The coordinates associated with this post are derived from GoogleEarth.

Easy find. Saw it from across the street, after finding benchmark at the Federal Courthouse. Beautiful building.

Me and J spotted this one while driving around downtown Ft. Smith. I find myself stopping every time I see a court house now looking for benchmarks. Usually I find one.

Found this one while out geocaching. it is in great shape. Picture to follow.

IN FORT SMITH, A DISK SET IN THE NORTHWEST FACE OF THE COURTHOUSE BUILDING, 0.1 KM (0.05 MI) SOUTHEAST ALONG ROGERS AVENUE FROM THE MAIN POST OFFICE AND THE MARK ON THE RIGHT, 1.46 METERS (1.5 FT) SOUTHWEST OF THE NORTHWEST CORNER OF THE COURTHOUSE. THE MARK IS 1.46 M ABOVE THE GROUND.

Control Text

  • The horizontal coordinates were scaled from a topographic map and have an estimated accuracy of +/- 6 seconds.
  • The orthometric height was determined by differential leveling and adjusted by the National Geodetic Survey in June 1991.
  • The geoid height was determined by GEOID99.
  • The dynamic height is computed by dividing the NAVD 88 geopotential number by the normal gravity value computed on the Geodetic Reference System of 1980 (GRS 80) ellipsoid at 45 degrees latitude (G = 980.6199 gals.).
  • The modeled gravity was interpolated from observed gravity values.
