DESCRIBED BY COAST AND GEODETIC SURVEY 1936 (JB) THE STATION IS LOCATED ACROSS THE ROAD (SOUTH) FROM THE DESERT PARK ZOO AND CURIO SHOP, WHICH IS ON U.S. HIGHWAY 66, BETWEEN HOLBROOK AND NAVAJO. THE STATION IS ON A SMALL KNOLL 100 YARDS SOUTH OF THE HIGHWAY. TO REACH THE STATION FROM HOLBROOK, GO EASTERLY ON U.S. HIGHWAY 66 (TOWARDS NAVAJO) FOR 26.4 MILES TO THE DESERT PARK ZOO AND CURIO SHOP. HERE TURN RIGHT OFF THE HIGHWAY THROUGH A STEEL FRAME GATE AND THEN A SMALL WOOD GATE, AND TO THE EDGE OF THE MESA, A TOTAL OF 100 YARDS FROM THE HIGHWAY. THE STATION MARK IS A STANDARD TRIANGULATION MARK SET IN THE TOP OF A SQUARE BLOCK OF CONCRETE, NOTE 1A. THE MARK IS STAMPED DESERT PARK 1936. THE UNDERGROUND MARK IS A STANDARD TRIANGULATION MARK SET IN THE TOP OF A BLOCK OF CONCRETE 3 FEET BELOW THE SURFACE OF THE GROUND. IT IS STAMPED DESERT PARK 1936. REFERENCE MARK NO. 1 IS 12.313 METERS (40.39 FEET) NORTHWEST OF THE STATION. IT IS A SQUARE BLOCK OF CONCRETE WITH STANDARD REFERENCE MARK IN THE TOP. IT IS STAMPED DESERT PARK NO. 1 1936. REFERENCE MARK NO. 2 IS 12.162 METERS (39.91 FEET) SOUTH-SOUTHEAST OF THE STATION. IT IS A SQUARE BLOCK OF CONCRETE WITH A STANDARD REFERENCE MARK SET IN THE TOP. THE MARK IS STAMPED DESERT PARK NO. 2 1936. THE AZIMUTH MARK IS AN ARIZONA STATE HIGHWAY DEPARTMENT BENCH MARK (ELEVATION 5785.70 FEET) STATION 283 + 00,1934. IT IS 0.4 MILE WEST OF THE STATION IN THE NORTH WINGWALL OF A CONCRETE CULVERT ON U.S. HIGHWAY 66. A 4-FOOT STAND SAW ALL STATIONS.

RECOVERY NOTE BY COAST AND GEODETIC SURVEY 1959 (SLH) THE STATION MARK, REFERENCE MARK NO. 1 AND REFERENCE MARK NO. 2 WERE RECOVERED AND FOUND IN GOOD CONDITION. THE AZIMUTH MARK WAS SEARCHED FOR BUT NOT RECOVERED. ANOTHER AZIMUTH MARK WAS ESTABLISHED. THE STATION IS ABOUT 25 MILES EAST OF HOLBROOK AND 0.1 MILE SOUTHEAST OF THE ABANDONED DESERT PARK ZOO. TO REACH THE STATION FROM THE JUNCTION OF U.S. HIGHWAYS 66 AND 260, JUST NORTH OF THE POST OFFICE IN HOLBROOK, GO NORTH AND EAST ON U.S. HIGHWAY 66 FOR 22.7 MILES TO A CROSSROAD. REFERENCE MARK 2, STAMPED DESERT PARK NO 2 1936, IS A STANDARD DISK SET IN THE TOP OF A 12 INCH SQUARE CONCRETE POST THAT PROJECTS 1 INCH. IT IS 55.6 FEET SOUTH OF THE WITNESS POST. THE DISTANCE BETWEEN R.M. 1 AND R.M. 2 IS 66.6 FEET. THE AZIMUTH MARK, STAMPED 5744.70 249 X 00, IS AN ARIZONA HIGHWAY DEPARTMENT ELEVATION STATION DISK CEMENTED IN THE NORTH HEAD WALL OF A CONCRETE CULVERT. Control Text

  • The horizontal coordinates were established by classical geodetic methods and adjusted by the National Geodetic Survey in August 1993.
  • The orthometric height was determined by differential leveling and adjusted by the National Geodetic Survey in June 1991.
  • The Laplace correction was computed from DEFLEC99 derived deflections.
  • The geoid height was determined by GEOID99.
  • The dynamic height is computed by dividing the NAVD 88 geopotential number by the normal gravity value computed on the Geodetic Reference System of 1980 (GRS 80) ellipsoid at 45 degrees latitude (G = 980.6199 gals.).
  • The modeled gravity was interpolated from observed gravity values.
