Recovered in good condition.
When you turn off Hwy 89 towards Sunset Crater take the first road left and head north on 545B. When the road starts to climb steeply in elevation watch for left turn. This is the "road" you want. If you miss this turn you will climb the cinder cone to a locked gate.

I found this mark in good condition. The actual location on my GPS rerad: N 35. 23.386', W 111. 33.655', elevation: 7055 feet. The description text is adequate.

DESCRIBED BY NATIONAL GEODETIC SURVEY 1934 14.9 MI N FROM TOWNSEND. FROM JUNCTION U.S. HIGHWAYS 66 AND 69, 12.6 MILES NORTH TO ROAD ON RIGHT TO SUNSET CRATER NATIONAL MONUMENT, 0.9 MILES EAST OF CROSSROADS, TURN LEFT, 1.4 MILES NORTH ON FOREST SERVICE ROAD, 53 FEET WEST OF CENTERLINE OF ROAD, NEAR THE CENTER OF A PROMINENT MOUND OF BLACK VOLCANIC ROCKS, IN THE TOP OF ROCKOUTCROP, STANDARD USC AND GS DISK.

  • The horizontal coordinates were scaled from a topographic map and have an estimated accuracy of +/- 6 seconds.
  • The orthometric height was determined by differential leveling and adjusted by the National Geodetic Survey in 1992. * This is a POSTED BENCH MARK height. Code A indicates a distribution rate of 0.0 thru 1.0 mm/km.
  • The geoid height was determined by GEOID99.
  • The dynamic height is computed by dividing the NAVD 88 geopotential number by the normal gravity value computed on the Geodetic Reference System of 1980 (GRS 80) ellipsoid at 45 degrees latitude (G = 980.6199 gals.).
  • The modeled gravity was interpolated from observed gravity values.
