On our 5th day in California, we found today our first benchmark on our way from the beach to have lunch on that bridge.

Greetings from Gegmany.

Hey, there's a benchmark on that bridge! Check off one more

Jumped out at us as we crossed the bridge. Area shot looking easterly along south rail of bridge. Could not get handheld coordinates; it was early evening, and satellites seem to have been scarce.

Out for a weekend of wine tasting, caching, and benchmarking. Spent the day sightseeing and NOT finding benchmarks. Nice to finally find one. Right where it was supposed to be. As previously noted, this mark has seen better days, but is still readable and usable.

Control Text

  • The horizontal coordinates were scaled from a topographic map and have an estimated accuracy of +/- 6 seconds.
  • The orthometric height was determined by differential leveling and adjusted by the National Geodetic Survey in June 1991.
  • This Tidal Bench Mark is designated as VM 8051 by the Center for Operational Oceanographic Products and Services.
  • The geoid height was determined by GEOID99.
  • The dynamic height is computed by dividing the NAVD 88 geopotential number by the normal gravity value computed on the Geodetic Reference System of 1980 (GRS 80) ellipsoid at 45 degrees latitude (G = 980.6199 gals.).
  • The modeled gravity was interpolated from observed gravity values.
