Documented History (by the NGS)

01/01/1873 by CGS (MONUMENTED)
01/01/1887 by CGS (MONUMENTED)
DESCRIBED BY COAST AND GEODETIC SURVEY 1887 (SF) ON A HILL 150 METERS W OF CHINA GULCH, WHICH IS THE NEXT GULCH ABOVE THE ARROYO LA CRUZ. ABOUT 5 METERS BACK FROM THE EDGE OF THE BLUFF, TOWARD THE SEA. THE CENTER WAS MARKED BY A GLASS BOTTLE, BURIED NECK UP, 3 FEET BELOW THE SURFACE OF THE GROUND, AND BY FOUR REDWOOD STUBS, EACH WITH A TACK IN THE TOP DRIVEN IN THE GROUND TO THE N, S, E, AND W. THE THREE OAK THEODOLITE STUBS WERE LEFT.

RECOVERY NOTE BY COAST AND GEODETIC SURVEY 1932 (CP) THOROUGH SEARCH MADE FOR THIS STATION BUT NOT FOUND. BANK EROSION MAY HAVE DESTROYED THIS STATION. RECOMMEND THAT THIS STATION BE DESCRIBED AS LOST.
01/01/1962 by CGS (MONUMENTED)
RECOVERY NOTE BY COAST AND GEODETIC SURVEY 1962 (WWH) RECOVERED THE CENTER GLASS BOTTLE, ITS TOP 2.7 FEET BELOW THE GROUND SURFACE, AND TO THE SOUTH, 2.2 FEET, TO THE NORTHWEST, 2.2 FEET, FOUND TWO GLASS BOTTLES, EACH ABOUT 1 FOOT BELOW GROUND LEVEL, ON THEIR SIDE WITH NECK POINTING TOWARDS THE CENTER, AND UNCOVERED ONE WOOD HUB INCIDENTAL TO THE SEARCH AT ABOUT 6 FEET TO THE NORTH. THE BOTTLE TO THE SOUTH WAS LEFT IN PLACE BUT IS BROKEN. THE CENTER BOTTLE WAS REMOVED, REPLACED WITH A COLUMN OF CONCRETE 5 INCHES IN DIAMETER, 6 INCHES LONG, A STANDARD DISK IN THE TOP, STAMPED CHINA GULCH 1873, CENTERED TO COINCIDED WITH THE OPENING OF THE BOTTLE REMOVED. ABOVE THIS WAS PLACED A 2-1/2 FOOT LENGTH OF ORANGEBURG SOIL PIPE, FILLED WITH CONCRETE, A STANDARD DISK IN ITS TOP STAMPED CHINA GULCH 1873, CENTER COINCIDES WITH THAT OF THE DISK BELOW, PROJECTS 2 INCHES. THE STATION CHINA 1932 IS TO THE NORTHEAST, ABOUT AZIMUTH 239 DEGREES. THE 1873 DESCRIPTION PLACED THE STATION 5 METERS BACK OFF THE BLUFF EDGE, IT IS NOW 2 METERS THERE-FROM. THE FIELD TO THE EAST FROM THE STATION HAS BEEN CLEARED OF BRUSH AND IS NOW PLANTED TO GRAIN.
01/01/1977 by NGS (GOOD)
RECOVERY NOTE BY NATIONAL GEODETIC SURVEY 1977 10.7 MI NW FROM SAN SIMEON. 10.5 MILES NORTHWEST ALONG STATE HIGHWAY 1 FROM THE BRIDGE OVER ARROYO DEL PUERTO AT SAN SIMEON, THENCE 0.2 MILE SOUTHWEST ACROSS COUNTRY, AT THE HIGHEST POINT OF A LARGE BLUFF, 7 FEET EAST OF THE EDGE OF THE CLIFF AND SURROUNDED BY A 4-INCH ORANGEBURG PIPE.

Control Text

  • The horizontal coordinates were established by classical geodetic methods and adjusted by the National Geodetic Survey in June 1996. The horizontal coordinates are valid at the epoch date displayed above. The epoch date for horizontal control is a decimal equivalence of Year/Month/Day.
  • The orthometric height was determined by differential leveling and adjusted by the National Geodetic Survey in June 1991.
  • The Laplace correction was computed from DEFLEC99 derived deflections.
  • The geoid height was determined by GEOID99.
  • The dynamic height is computed by dividing the NAVD 88 geopotential number by the normal gravity value computed on the Geodetic Reference System of 1980 (GRS 80) ellipsoid at 45 degrees latitude (G = 980.6199 gals.).
  • The modeled gravity was interpolated from observed gravity values.
