Many of the grinding holes were covered with ice plant...but DZ and I enjoyed walking around up here. He luckily pulled back the right area to expose the benchmark!

Had a bit of trouble recovering this one. This whole half of the rock is covered with a heavy blanket of Ice Plant. I tried to leave it a bit uncovered but I'm sure it will regrow over soon.

It's a very cool spot - worth visiting.

Stopped by to grab the benchmark on my trip traveling along Highway 1. A beautiful drive when you have time to enjoy the scenery.

came across this by accident. love the view!

Found after finding a nearby cache. The Indian grinding holes and the shell trash pile nearby was really cool to see.

Found as described. With NamGuy today.

It was getting dark and I had to use flash. There are a lot of Indian grinding holes near this marker.

RECOVERY NOTE BY COAST AND GEODETIC SURVEY 1916 (EBL) ON ROCKY KNOLL, S OF THE REMAINS OF A WHARF BUILT BY THE COUNTY. TWO OF THE BOTTLES OF THE ORIGINAL MARKING WERE BROKEN IN THE SEARCH FOR THE STATION. ONE BOTTLE LEFT IN PLACE. THE REMAINS, WELL ROTTED, OF THE LOWER END OF THE OLD CENTER STUB WERE FOUND. SURFACE MARK IS A STANDARD BRONZE DISK SET IN CONCRETE, AS DESCRIBED IN NOTE 1C. UNDERGROUND MARK IS A STONE WITH DRILL HOLES. DESCRIPTION STATED THAT THE UNDERGROUND MARK WAS 2 FEET BELOW THE SURFACE. IT WAS FOUND TO BE 1 FOOT BELOW THE SURFACE. REFERENCE MARK IS A STANDARD BRONZE DISK IN OUTCROPPING BEDROCK AS DESCRIBED IN NOTE 12A. NOTE--AT THIS STATION AND OTHERS IN THE VICINITY, THE DESCRIPTIONS ARE ERRONEOUS AS TO THE DEPTHS GIVEN FOR THE UNDERGROUND MARKS.

Control Text

  • The horizontal coordinates were established by classical geodetic methods and adjusted by the National Geodetic Survey in June 1996. The horizontal coordinates are valid at the epoch date displayed above. The epoch date for horizontal control is a decimal equivalence of Year/Month/Day.
  • The NAVD 88 height was computed by applying the VERTCON shift value to the NGVD 29 height (displayed under SUPERSEDED SURVEY CONTROL.)
  • The Laplace correction was computed from DEFLEC99 derived deflections.
  • The geoid height was determined by GEOID99.
