Original fact sheet of this benchmark states it was placed on top of the monument in the center of the cardinal direction marker. Fact sheet also says it was not recovered in 1979. It is definitely not where the fact sheet says and is likely missing.

Found a while ago with the virtual cache here, but was unfamiliar with benchmarking then. Visited this place again today to log the benchmarks.

Finally figuring out how to log benchmarks. I found this while searching for the virtual cache at the same location.

I guess technically this it he large NSEW compass disc on the top of the Zero mile marker. Although I couldn't really tell from the description. The 1979 log claims it was destroyed by the sidewalk construction.

Like many geocachers before us, we were brought here by the virtual cache. We found three benchmarks here, all in good condition, including this one.

On a cache site

I was directed to closely reread the original datasheet for this benchmark to realize that I had actually spotted this one on the monument - it just isn't marked as a benchmark. Sometimes you just have to be pointed to proper location. This was recovered - as originally described.

Found as described, this is the center of the large disk with compass directions affixed to the top of the Zero Monument in front of the MacArthur Memorial in downtown Norfolk at the intersection of Bank Street and City Hall Avenue.

The point measured is apparently the tiny (1 mm or smaller) dimple a the intersection of the N-S and E-W arms of the compass disk.

Adjacent to the large disk is a smaller triangulation station disk, ZERO (FX0145). On the side of the Zero Monument, mounted vertically, is the disk for station ZERO MILESTONE (FX0146).

The "BSA" in the station designation is apparently explained by the inscription on the Zero Monument, which includes the following: "Erected by the Boy Scouts of Norfolk February 8 1929."

Curious concerning the Jan 1, 1979 comment from NGS. I wonder if that comment was meant for the FX3488 marker?

There it was... cool!

Text in description reads:

"IS THE CENTER OF A CROSS THAT IS FORMED BY ARROWS ON THE CENTER OF A DIRECTIONAL BRASS PLATE WHICH IS ON A 1-FOOT STONE POST THAT PROJECTS ABOUT 3 FEET. THE POST IS CALLED ZERO MILESTONE"

This sounds like a description for the large diameter plate mounted on the top of the Zero Milestone. Also on this milestone are two other BMs. One appears to be a horizontal control marker and the other a vertical marker.

Control Text

  • The horizontal coordinates were scaled from a topographic map and have an estimated accuracy of +/- 6 seconds.
  • The orthometric height was determined by differential leveling and adjusted by the National Geodetic Survey in June 1991. WARNING-Repeat measurements at this control monument indicate possible vertical movement.
  • The geoid height was determined by GEOID99.
  • The dynamic height is computed by dividing the NAVD 88 geopotential number by the normal gravity value computed on the Geodetic Reference System of 1980 (GRS 80) ellipsoid at 45 degrees latitude (g = 980.6199 gals.).
  • The modeled gravity was interpolated from observed gravity values.
