This was probably the most fun I have had finding a benchmark. The marker is there in good condition, just as described, at the SW corner of the bridge. The problem is getting there. Park on Hwy 20 at about 36-18.566 95-28.827, then hike about 480 feet N along the stream. You may have an easier time just east of the stream. There is heavy growth. I recommend getting on top of the bridge at the east, since there is a fence at the west end. I recorded 36-18.644 95-28.816 for the marker. There is all sorts of discarded metal junk on top of the bridge. The old highway is completely grown over.

  • The horizontal coordinates were scaled from a topographic map and have an estimated accuracy of +/- 6 seconds.
  • The orthometric height was determined by differential leveling and adjusted by the National Geodetic Survey in June 1991.
  • The geoid height was determined by GEOID99.
  • The dynamic height is computed by dividing the NAVD 88 geopotential number by the normal gravity value computed on the Geodetic Reference System of 1980 (GRS 80) ellipsoid at 45 degrees latitude (G = 980.6199 gals.).
  • The modeled gravity was interpolated from observed gravity values.
