Found it as described - the old road is VERY faint and sandy/rough. It takes a 4X4 to drive to the mark. The coordinates are as noted.

DESCRIBED BY US GEOLOGICAL SURVEY 1970 1.2 MI NE FROM TONALEA. 1.2 MILE NORTHEAST ALONG U.S. HWY. 164 FROM TONALEA, COCONINO COUNTY, 0.1 MILE NORTHEAST ALONG U.S. HWY. 164 FROM THE ELEPHANT FEET ROCK FORMATION, THENCE SOUTHEAST ON A DIRT ROAD 0.1 MILE TO A FORK, THENCE SOUTHWEST ALONG A USED SEGEMENT OF THE OLD TUBA CITY-KAYENTA DIRT ROAD 0.4 MILE TO A POINT 1300 FEET SOUTH OF AND ON THE EXTENSION OF THE LINE CONNECTING THE CENTERS OF THE ELEPHANT FEET, AND 51 FEET SOUTHEAST OF THE CENTERLINE OF THE ROAD.

Control Text

  • The horizontal coordinates were scaled from a topographic map and have an estimated accuracy of +/- 6 seconds.
  • The orthometric height was determined by differential leveling and adjusted by the National Geodetic Survey in June 1991.
  • The geoid height was determined by GEOID99.
  • The dynamic height is computed by dividing the NAVD 88 geopotential number by the normal gravity value computed on the Geodetic Reference System of 1980 (GRS 80) ellipsoid at 45 degrees latitude (G = 980.6199 gals.).
  • The modeled gravity was interpolated from observed gravity values.
