Found CANYON, as described. I say "CANYON" because that appears to be the name stamped on it. What the datasheet calls the "designation", "6866", appears to be what's stamped in it as the "elevation above sea".

I'm pointing over the wall at the mark, which is approximately at the level of the standing area.

Bei meiner Wanderung am South Rim gut und schnell gefunden.

Found it while touring the dam.

Found while here visiting the USA from Australia on holidays.
We're at the Grand Canyon today seeing all the sights.
Now we've spotted this we can go inside and find a souvenir.

Found while preparing to hike down to Phantom Ranch.

I saw an interesting non-PID disk in the area near where you change between east loop and west loop shuttles, so will post the picture here, as this is the nearest mark in the list.

That's a nice challenges.

Found while on vacation

Good coordinates in fegan's log. Go through the gift shop and look over the edge. It's below the light fixture.

Found during our visit to Grand Canyon National Park, on our 18 day road trip.

There was construction near the site but I was still able to get to the mark.

My Bride and I hiked down to Indian Gardens and back out in 7 hours. 2 days later my calves are still sore!

Had to search a bit, but found it.

We found our first benchmark ever. The Grand Canyon is really great! We search this with my Samsung and Locus app. Thank you!

photoour first benchmark

We wanted to get at least one benchmark in Arizona and took the easy way out by using the "spoiler" picture from a previous log.

I finally found it. It took me leaning way out over the rock ledge to finally spot it. There was a light fixture blocking it. But i prevailed and made the find. Great views of the canyon from here as well!

Last find in the park for me today before catching the train to Williams. It has been 40 years since my last visit. I wonder if I'll ever pass this way again?

Found it!

Kids found this before I did.

This one was as much fun to find as finding a actual cache! Took two tries to get it, the first time the Gift Shop was closed.

Coordinates to accuracy of 16 feet. This benchmark is in fine condition, and I gave a little squeal of joy when I leaned over the wall and spotted it. All the visitors at the Overlook Studio thought I was a bit crazy, I'm sure. We found the altitude to be 6866 feet. You can't see it unless you lean over the wall a little, and then it's right there staring up at you, just to the left of the spot light that shines down to the lower level of the lookout point. The NGS description is still accurate.

I took this standing just above the benchmark. All markers should be in such beautiful locations! That's Bright Angel Trail leading through Indian Garden Campground (the trees) to Plateau Point.

Control Text

  • The horizontal coordinates were scaled from a topographic map and have an estimated accuracy of +/- 6 seconds.
  • The orthometric height was determined by differential leveling and adjusted by the National Geodetic Survey in 1992. * This is a POSTED BENCH MARK height. Code A indicates a distribution rate of 0.0 thru 1.0 mm/km.
  • The geoid height was determined by GEOID99.
  • The dynamic height is computed by dividing the NAVD 88 geopotential number by the normal gravity value computed on the Geodetic Reference System of 1980 (GRS 80) ellipsoid at 45 degrees latitude (G = 980.6199 gals.).
  • The modeled gravity was interpolated from observed gravity values.
