Recovered in good condition. Also found RM2, but did not find RM1. Did not look for the azimuth mark.

Parked on the Toroweep RD and hiked over to the coordinates and spotted RM2 rather quickly and followed the arrow back to where the GPSr zeroed out. I did not see any bedrock for the disk to be located in, so hiked back to the truck and went on our way. We were going to try and located a pair of caves, but got stopped by the road we had turned onto when it turned into a small lake.

We returned the way we had come and stopped again for TRENCH. This time I took a probe and metal detector along on the hike. After finding old battery parts and nails I adjusted the filter to avoid the junk metals and got a solid hit. A few pokes with the probe and I knew I had found the mark. It was just a matter of uncovering the mark and getting it clean enough for pictures.

On the way back to the highway We had a flat tire, so I got to have even more fun today.

Control Text

  • The horizontal coordinates were established by classical geodetic methods and adjusted by the National Geodetic Survey in August 1993.
  • The NAVD 88 height was computed by applying the VERTCON shift value to the NGVD 29 height (displayed under SUPERSEDED SURVEY CONTROL.)
  • The Laplace correction was computed from DEFLEC99 derived deflections.
  • The geoid height was determined by GEOID99.
