Since I was traveling from California to Utah alone today, I decided to add a number of hours to the trip and visit the dam. I enjoyed it and I was able to find a few geocaches and benchmarks along the way.

This one was easy enough to spot when you begin the hike across the dam. However, it isn't as easy to see all the markings on it. The 'V' is almost completely gone now.

Visiting from Minnesota!

Spotted this one and others while visiting the Hoover Dam with family.

Touring the bridge and dam today and then using www.findbenchmarks.com to find a ton of marks on the dam. I wish I could have had a few more and I would have pulled off a really easy 25 BM day! Oh well.

This one is really worn and you can barely make out the V in front of the 4. I can't see the T at all. However, the setting views confirm where this one is.

My daughter noticed this benchmark for me near the Wing Figures sculpture. You can still barely see the '4' of the 'V4' stamp and the position is still about a foot and a half from the step.
After this mark I noticed almost too many benchmarks to keep track on the dam.

Yahoo! My first benchmark!

Its funny to see all the visitors just walking past these benchmarks, but when I stop, bend down and take a close up picture then walk away. other people then scoot over and take a picture too..

(Translated with Google):
Some geocachers were planning a trip to the US for ET Power Trail and various old geocaches. I was asked if I would like to join the tour and I had! On 10/01/2015 our (Butjer, Tudor99 and ropno) personal Roadtrip 2015 began.

We started in Las Vegas with 93°F hot humid summer weather, explored the "Strip" and drove to the Hoover Dam.
Here we found a lot of bench marks.

After a few days we went into the desert for Extraterrestrial Highway with its many, many (2400!) ET caches and brought the rain. The temperature dropped through the storm clouds on homelike 65°F, we had no dust on the "dirt roads", no flooded roads as it "poured out all buckets" rarely about us, the clouds mostly very fixed in the near mountains. We didn´t get a sunburn and needed less water than planned to drink. We saw a lot of cattle, horses, antelopes, a coyote, rabbits, many birds, bugs and insects, as well as beautiful areas and landscapes, yellow flowering shrubs and more cars and quads than expected, but fortunately no rattlesnake or scorpions. On the fourth day in Nevada desert the sun came through and we saw still the expected "desert feel".

The second week our tour continued north to the oldest caches over Lake Tahoe, Eureka, Crescent City to the Pacific coast (50°F, fog) and on about Oregon City to Seattle (63°F, sun) to Groundspeak HQ and there was even time for trip to Utah, Idaho, Montana and a day trip by catamaran to British Columbia in Canada.

After 11441 mi by airplane, 3538 mi by car, 175 mi by ship and approximately 72 mi on foot walk unfortunately and we had to go home on 10/16/2015. But the idea for the next US tour is already on the horizon...

Best regards from Germany
ropno

Found on the way to Vegas

On 8-4-12 I was married to the intelligent, gorgeous, phenomenally amazing woman known as theladybee! Shortly thereafter we set upon a honeymoon excursion across the western two thirds of our glorious country. We embarked from Columbus, Ohio and spent the next two weeks packing in as much beauty as we could. We would awaken around 8am, drive and explore all day and night until around midnight, find a hotel, go to sleep, and repeat it the next day. We journeyed through 20 states: Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Missouri, Kansas, Nebraska, Colorado, Utah, New Mexico, Arizona, Nevada, California, Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, South Dakota, Minnesota, and Iowa. We marveled at 8 National Parks: Black Canyon of the Gunnison, Mesa Verde, Petrified Forest, Grand Canyon, Sequoia, Kings Canyon, Yosemite, Badlands. We wondered at 2 National Monuments: Gateway Arch, Devils Tower. We got up close and personal with lynx, elk, rams, bear, prairie dogs, and other varmint. We paid homage to the original stash, the oldest remaining cache, HQ, and even got down at the Block Party. We targeted caches to help us qualify for challenges, to help us create challenges, challenges themselves, earth and virtual caches in the parks, and anything interesting we happened to come across. We drove 7,449 miles in total. The things that awed me, the sensations I experienced, I will remember them always, but they pale in comparison to the time I spent with the lady who is my life. The journey we took will stay with me forever. Thank you for placing a cache that constituted part of our journey.

Found on our trip out west from Alabama

Went out to Las Vegas on vacation and took a trip to the hoover dam. This thing was loaded with benchmarks. I guess that is normal for one of the 7 wonders of the United States!

The UGE (CoheedDrummer, H-Rob(RTR), and J-Brown!) and a couple of our wives (MrsFirenze and MrsCoheedDrummer) came out from Montgomery, AL to Las Vegas for a geocaching/sightseeing trip this week. We grabbed some caches that were high favorites, some for the Jasmer challenge, had a day for the numbers along Route 66, and even grabbed them when they just happened to be near us. Had a great time doing ALMOST all the things Vegas has to offer. Spent an afternoon at the Hoover Dam, drove through Zion National Park, and spent a sunset at the Grand Canyon. Finished the Extremely Busy Day Challenge as well. We also ate some good food at Craftsteak, Mesa Grill, and the Cheesecake Factory. What an awesome place to visit!

In the UK we can't log our version of benchmarks (Trig points) on GC.com and I have never bothered with logging them on the UK website set up for this.

We visited the Hoover Dam on the way from the Grand Canyon to Lake Mead and as I was standing in front of the sculpture near the dam, I noticed something on the floor. I looked closer and decided that it was probably a benchmark. I had no idea what the protocol for logging these was so I took a photo and see that that is more than enough to log it. The hardest bit was deciding which of the many near the dam it was!

Found today with many others on the bridge.

Still there and in excellent condition.
Amazing how many people pass this every day and never observe it. -NS2

Found this one along with 12 others while touring the dam. I wan't even planning on doing any geocaching or benchmark hunting while on this vacation, but I couldn't pass up the opportunity. As I expected, they are well documented and photographed, so I won't add yet another picture to the database.

Visiting Dam

Another benchmark found while walking the dam with my mom

Recovered in good condition wear on V makes it hard to read.

Mark located on station. It is highly polished from wear and the V4 is hard tok read.

Recovered in good condition...

N 36° 00.996 W 114° 44.343

Started our benchmark recording here, spent about an hour trying to find as many as we could.

Benchmark recovered as described, in good condition. The V4 is pretty well worn, and the brass cap is shiny.

This is a Coast & Geodetic Survey Benchmark.

We were in Vegas for a week and decided to take a trip to the Hoover Dam. When I stumbled upon this, I thought we would log it just for kicks!

Control Text

  • The horizontal coordinates were scaled from a topographic map and have an estimated accuracy of +/- 6 seconds.
  • The orthometric height was determined by differential leveling and adjusted by the National Geodetic Survey in June 1991.
  • The geoid height was determined by GEOID99.
  • The dynamic height is computed by dividing the NAVD 88 geopotential number by the normal gravity value computed on the Geodetic Reference System of 1980 (GRS 80) ellipsoid at 45 degrees latitude (G = 980.6199 gals.).
  • The modeled gravity was interpolated from observed gravity values.
