Found it at the coordinates provided by Heplercache and Kivotos. Was on the way to the airport and did not have time to measure the 33 or 18 foot measurements for verification.

Found approximately per 1935 description except that it is now 1 block east of Highway 29 BUSINESS route (rather than the main route of Highway 29).

The sandstone post protrudes 8 inches above ground.

The courthouse was undergoing renovation during this visit and was surrounded by a construction fence.

Unrelated Trivia: The courthouse was built in 1810 and has been in continuous use since then.

On our way back from floating the Staunton River and figured we'd stop to see if we could find this benchmark. Used the description since the coordinates were a little off and took some pictures to help others find it.

DESCRIBED BY NATIONAL GEODETIC SURVEY 1935 AT LOVINGSTON. AT LOVINGSTON, NELSON COUNTY, 1 BLOCK EAST OF U.S. HIGHWAY 29, ON THE LAWN OF THE COUNTY COURTHOUSE, 33 FEET WEST OF THE WEST SIDE OF THE BUILDING, AND 18 FEET NORTH OF THE CENTERLINE OF THE SIDEWALK LEADING TO THE SOUTH ENTRANCE. A CHISELED SQUARE ON THE TOP OF A SANDSTONE POST PROJECTING ABOUT 6 INCHES ABOVE GROUND.

Control Text

  • The horizontal coordinates were scaled from a topographic map and have an estimated accuracy of +/- 6 seconds.
  • The orthometric height was determined by differential leveling and adjusted by the National Geodetic Survey in June 1991.
  • The geoid height was determined by GEOID99.
  • The dynamic height is computed by dividing the NAVD 88 geopotential number by the normal gravity value computed on the Geodetic Reference System of 1980 (GRS 80) ellipsoid at 45 degrees latitude (g = 980.6199 gals.).
  • The modeled gravity was interpolated from observed gravity values.
