Must Read!

Benchmarks may be on private property or in dangerous locations. Obey local laws. By using the services on Geocaching.com you agree to this disclaimer.

Bote to future hunters: There is now a sign just off the butte stating clearly that the butte is on PRIVATE PROPERTY. Therefore, we did not attempt to find the benchmark disk.

Found in good condition. What an awesome hike. Yes, it took me longer than 5 minutes, and I didn't have any survey equipment!

Found RM1 and RM2 fine, tho beaten up.
Mark was also heavily beaten, as if someone has been trying to remove it.
Azimuth Mark is no longer on bridge (was replaced in 1982). New Azimuth mark is PID AH8739. Found it in good condition.

Recovery submitted to NGS.

Shows just how high and steep up this butte is.

The dirt road center is how to get to the Butte. The visible roadbed on the right-side, heading towards the center (bridge just right of center) is I-25.
photoFrom the bottom, looking up.
Taken from the bottom of the Butte, looking up at where the marks are. GPS read it as just about 160 feet. :)

Went up the butte today - didn't see any signs about it being on private property, so I went ahead without asking. Kept an eye out for snakes - didn't see any. Benchmark is right where it always has been.

I have always wanted to climb up to the top and today I did. This was easier than I expected. Lots of fun and great views.

Some great views and shows just how high it is.

Drove around the Butte but did not go up as it is private land

Mission and challenge complete! Found it on my way to San Antonio. BM and the 2 reference points on top recovered as described. Took me more than the 5 minute pack to the top referenced in the original description. CP, the hike up was bad enough, but coming down was the real fun part. Managed not the slide down though. I went up the East side through a natural channel type formation. A little tricky with the sand and loose rock. Somebody had graced RM2 I think it was by scratching the letter A right in the middle of it. I looked for the azimuth mark mentioned on the bridge, but was unable to find it. I am assuming the bridge for I25 has been replaced since 1949. If anyone finds it, let me know. I'll try and upload the picks I took at a later time.
