Stopped here to do the Hoodoos earth cache, the benchmark was a nice extra. Good job there's a Witness Post here otherwise I probably wouldn't have found this one.

Up checking out the toad stools, surprised to see the marker here

Found this while getting the nearby earth cache. It took a while to locate as it's not by the posted coords. It's near the hikers gate entrance. It also was covered in dirt and needed to be exposed to be visible. Thanks.

Sorry for logging late!
From March to May 2016 I rode my bicycle more than 7000 miles from Miami FL to Vancouver BC. One of the goals was to find at least one cache in each visited state…
There are hundreds of caches at the side of the road which I did not look for...

London GB

  • night caching near airport while waiting for connection

FL

  • flat
  • warm and sunny
  • rail trails (with mostly ignored PTs)
  • many animals
  • Southern Tier bike route to LA
  • met geocachers for the first time on the trip

GA

  • just for statistics
  • bad road surface

AL

  • rain
  • a sea ferry that does not run because of a 10mph wind
  • floodings

LA

  • floodings
  • police officers that are more honest than the tourist departement would like

MS

  • floodings
  • more uphills than expected
  • bad road surfaces
  • Mississippi River Trail to MO

AR

  • flat
  • worst drivers

TN

  • urban sprawl

KY

  • nice small roads
  • detour

IL

  • only got here because of the non running ferry KY-MO

MO

  • Ozarks = a lot of downhills, not only those
  • first snow of tour
  • interesting countryside

KS

  • flat
  • windy
  • cold
  • simple to navigate
  • Mingo

CO

  • flat (yes!)
  • good road surfaces

OK

  • first (small) uphill for what felt like ever

TX

  • just for statistics
  • empty and cold

NM

  • empty
  • snow and cold but mostly sunny

UT and AZ

  • one week long loop
  • amazing landscape: Monument Valley, Zion NP (incl Kolob), Vermillion Cliffs, Grand Canyon
  • usually cold
  • 10 ft high snow walls at the side of the road and sweating in TShirt on the same day
  • luck in a lottery
  • Old Route 66

NV

  • Hoover Dam
  • Las Vegas
  • start of an insane 380 mi non stop stage

CA

  • amazing landscape: Death Valley, coast, Redwoods
  • hilly and more headwind than in any other state
  • saw more people on bicycles on a couple miles through San Francisco than on the whole rest of the trip

OR

  • coast
  • special caches. All with some uphills: Original, 12, 17

WA

  • first running ferries of tour
  • remote beaches
  • rain forests
  • HQ

British Columbia (Canada)

  • sunny, warm, tailwind

Greetings from Switzerland / Grüessli us dr Schwiiz

First time I found a "benchmark". Maybe not surprising, since this is the first time I do caching in the USA, and this appears to be a USA thing only. Chances are it will take a long time before I found a second, if ever. But it's nice to have one on my list!

While stopping for a nearby cache, the description mentioned a benchmark so of course we needed to find it. We looked and looked, then speedy#1 spotted it....and wouldn't you know that we parked right in front! :)

I spotted this one first....with Chrmdome, pip$queak, and 2ndcup.

Found it when stopping for a geocache.

Found on our Trip while traveling from Page to Zion National Park.

Found as we were geocaching :-)

Found it after searching a nearby geocache.

While our journey across the USA we also visited Las Vegas, Page, the Valley of Fire and much more. During travelling to/in this places we also searched some caches and visited some interessting sites.
While searching the cache "Hoo Doo 's" we also found our first benchmark!
Greetings from Austria,
Alex & Sandra

Control Text

  • The horizontal coordinates were scaled from a topographic map and have an estimated accuracy of +/- 6 seconds.
  • The orthometric height was determined by differential leveling and adjusted by the National Geodetic Survey in June 1991.
  • The geoid height was determined by GEOID99.
  • The dynamic height is computed by dividing the NAVD 88 geopotential number by the normal gravity value computed on the Geodetic Reference System of 1980 (GRS 80) ellipsoid at 45 degrees latitude (G = 980.6199 gals.).
  • The modeled gravity was interpolated from observed gravity values.
