This one took some effort to find. We measured from the turn into Crosby canyon and didn't see any sign of of the witness post or the benchmark. We then went to the location for H 144 and measured back to G 144. We went slightly past where we first measured so we back tracked some. Shirley said "there's a BM X on the map without the BM. Just the X.". I was looking out my window trying to decide Where the ledge was that should be holding the benchmark and noticed at that same time Shirley was telling me about the X that a boulder in front of a ledge had BM with an arrow on it. (See photo)

I got out of the truck and took a couple of pictures of the BM and arrow and decided that the arrow must be pointing to a ledge just over the rise, so I climbed up to the "rock wall" and looked around for a witness post and the mark. I knew I had climbed to high, but I wanted to make sure I didn't miss anything because of an error on the datasheet. I worked my way back down and step out on the boulder that had the BM on it and look over the edge and lo & behold there was the mark. No need to have climbed up the side of the cliff! If I had only paid attention to what was there I would have saved myself some unnecessary climbing.

The mark was recovered in good condition and close to where the datasheet and map designation ("X") said it would be found.

Control Text

  • The horizontal coordinates were scaled from a topographic map and have an estimated accuracy of +/- 6 seconds.
  • The orthometric height was determined by differential leveling and adjusted by the National Geodetic Survey in June 1991.
  • The geoid height was determined by GEOID99.
  • The dynamic height is computed by dividing the NAVD 88 geopotential number by the normal gravity value computed on the Geodetic Reference System of 1980 (GRS 80) ellipsoid at 45 degrees latitude (G = 980.6199 gals.).
  • The modeled gravity was interpolated from observed gravity values.
