I am visiting the area from Ontario, Canada and caching from Las Vegas to points north with Sissyta, tumbleweed2 and SP&SFan. This one was a target for three of us today and we found it after a brief search.

Easy as 1,2,3.

Recovered as described,in good condition. It did appear as though a cow had backed up to the fence and left a 'surprise' for whomever was going to recover this benchmark.

ABOUT 2.4 MILES SOUTH ALONG U.S. HIGHWAY 91 FROM KANARRAVILLE, IRON COUNTY, 49 FEET WEST OF THE CENTER LINE OF THE HIGHWAY, 67 FEET SOUTH OF A GATE, AND 1 FOOT EAST OF A FENCE LINE. A UNITED STATES GEOLOGICAL SURVEY STANDARD DISK, STAMPED H 3 1928 AND SET IN THE TOP OF A CONCRETE POST.

RECOVERY NOTE BY NATIONAL GEODETIC SURVEY 1984 RECOVERED IN GOOD CONDITION. NEW DESCRIPTION FOLLOWS. 3.97 KM (2.47 MI) SOUTHWEST ALONG US HIGHWAY 91 FROM THE CHURCH OF LATTER DAY SAINTS AT KANARRAVILLE, IN THE SOUTHWEST CORNER OF THE INTERSECTION OF A DIM TRACK ROAD, 15.6 METERS (51 FT) NORTHWEST OF THE HIGHWAY CENTERLINE, 26.7 METERS (87.5 FT) SOUTHWEST OF THE SOUTHWEST ONE OF TWO LARGE TREES, 17.5 METERS (57.5 FT) SOUTHWEST OF THE SOUTHWEST GATE POST FOR A WIRE GATE, 29.1 METERS (95.5 FT) NORTHEAST OF A FENCE T JUNCTION AND 0.5 METER (1.5 FT) SOUTHEAST OF A FENCE. THE MARK IS 0.4 METERS NW FROM A WITNESS POST. THE MARK IS ABOVE LEVEL WITH THE HIGHWAY.

  • The horizontal coordinates were scaled from a topographic map and have an estimated accuracy of +/- 6 seconds.
  • The orthometric height was determined by differential leveling and adjusted by the National Geodetic Survey in June 1991.
  • The geoid height was determined by GEOID99.
  • The dynamic height is computed by dividing the NAVD 88 geopotential number by the normal gravity value computed on the Geodetic Reference System of 1980 (GRS 80) ellipsoid at 45 degrees latitude (G = 980.6199 gals.).
  • The modeled gravity was interpolated from observed gravity values.
