USA Westcoast Roadtrip 2018??????

After the HQ, the HQ-GeoTour, the Ape and GCD we drove down to Portland to find GC12 and visit the Original Stash Tribute Plaque we flew to L.A. and started the actual Roadtrip. San Francisco, Santa Barara, Monterey, Yosemite Nationalpark, Death Valley and Las Vegas were on my list.

I found this benchmark with RavRobin after we found the nearby Big Pine Triangle County Park Virtual cache. We used the coords on that cache page, and we ended up right next to the benchmark. I attached a photo with my pad of paper with some notes on a solved puzzle and some other nonsense.

Found this one while hunting the nearby virtual cache, "Big Pine Triangle County Park Virtual" (GCEECF). The coordinates for this benchmark on that cache page are much better - N 37 10.394 W 118 17.396 - and made for a quick find.

Found the BM after being directed towards it by the nearby Virtual cache.

We stopped here on our way to Lone Pine to do the virtual. It is still there.

After a good night in Lone Pine, today we are on our way to Lee Vining. On the road to our destination we found some caches. At one cache we found this benchmark! Saw it together with Darkpommes and Dekotaubi.

One of many we found on our way to the "SoCal4x4 Sierra Social ‘n Sleepover" in Mammoth. 5 days/4 nights of camping, 4x4ing, and geocaching with my brother (cosmo_bond) and dad (jerrytcher) will visiting in CA. Cool area! Grabbed on the way to a 4 day camping trip in mammoth. Thanks for the find.

DESCRIBED BY NATIONAL GEODETIC SURVEY 1987 0.6 KM (0.35 MI) NORTH FROM BIG PINE. 0.64 KM (0.40 MI) NORTH ALONG US HIGHWAY 395 FROM THE POST OFFICE IN BIG PINE, AT THE JUNCTION OF STATE HIGHWAY 168 EAST, 19.8 M (65.0 FT) EAST OF THE CENTERLINE OF HIGHWAY 395, 27.0 M (88.6 FT) SOUTH OF THE CENTERLINE OF HIGHWAY 168, 10.45 M (34.3 FT) SOUTH OF THE EAST END OF A 36-INCH CULVERT, 0.30 M (1.0 FT) WEST OF A FENCE. NOTE--ACCESS TO DATUM POINT IS HAD THROUGH A 5-INCH LOGO CAP. THE MARK IS 1.0 METERS S FROM A WITNESS POST THE MARK IS 3.0 M BELOW THE HIGHWAY.

Control Text

  • The horizontal coordinates were scaled from a topographic map and have an estimated accuracy of +/- 6 seconds.
  • The orthometric height was determined by differential leveling and adjusted by the National Geodetic Survey in June 1991.
  • The geoid height was determined by GEOID99.
  • The dynamic height is computed by dividing the NAVD 88 geopotential number by the normal gravity value computed on the Geodetic Reference System of 1980 (GRS 80) ellipsoid at 45 degrees latitude (G = 980.6199 gals.).
  • The modeled gravity was interpolated from observed gravity values.
