I and several non-cachers including a Sandia Security Officer found the Tesla Benchmark and Reference Markers 1 and 2 today. A GPS is not allowed in this area so I used the given Benchmark coordinates and a few additional maps for our basic location. With a great Sandia Team effort, the markers were found in little time. The Tesla Benchmark and Reference Markers 1 and 2 are located on Sandia property and are behind several locked fences. We (as employees) could only access this area with the Security Officer. It is not an area available to the general public. The markers are in good condition after not being inspected in 20 years.

Documented History (by the NGS)

01/01/1947 by CGS (MONUMENTED)
DESCRIBED BY COAST AND GEODETIC SURVEY 1947 (SPH) THE STATION IS NEAR THE SUMMIT OF A BARE, PARTIALLY CULTIVATED RIDGE, WHICH HAS TWO POWER LINES RUNNING OVER THE TOP, ABOUT 3-1/2 MILES EAST SOUTHEAST OF LIVERMORE AND 1 MILE SOUTH OF THE U.S. NAVAL AIR STATION. IT IS ON THE PROPERTY OF THE U.S. NAVAL AIR STATION AND NEAR THE CREST OF THE RIDGE ALONG THE WEST BOUNDARY OF THE PROPERTY. THE STATION MARK, STAMPED TESLA 1947, IS A STANDARD DISK SET IN A 12 INCH SQUARE CONCRETE POST PROJECTING 4 INCHES ABOVE THE SURFACE. IT IS 20.5 METERS EAST SOUTHEAST OF A PILE OF ROCK ON THE HIGHEST POINT OF THE RIDGE, 4.7 METERS SOUTH AND 1 FOOT LOWER THAN THE CREST OF THE RIDGE, 1.1 METERS EAST OF THE FENCE LINE, AND 3 METERS NORTH OF A WHITE WITNESS POST. REFERENCE MARK NO. 1, STAMPED TESLA NO 1 1947, IS A STANDARD DISK SET IN A 12 INCH SQUARE CONCRETE POST PROJECTING 4 INCHES ABOVE THE SURFACE. IT IS ON THE NORTH SLOPE OF THE RIDGE AT ABOUT THE SAME ELEVATION AS THE STATION MARK AND 0.6 METER EAST OF THE FENCE LINE. REFERENCE MARK NO. 2, STAMPED TESLA NO 2 1947, IS A STANDARD DISK SET IN A 12 INCH SQUARE CONCRETE POST PROJECTING 4 INCHES ABOVE THE SURFACE. IT IS ON THE SOUTH SLOPE OF THE RIDGE, ABOUT 4 FEET LOWER THAN THE STATION MARK, AND 1.2 METERS EAST OF THE FENCE LINE. THE AZIMUTH MARK, STAMPED TESLA 1947, IS A STANDARD DISK SET IN A 12 INCH SQUARE CONCRETE POST PROJECTING 6 INCHES ABOVE THE SURFACE OF THE GROUND. IT IS 0.15 MILE SOUTH ALONG THE PAVED ROAD FROM THE MAIN ENTRANCE TO THE NAVAL AIR STATION, 1 METER EAST OF THE EDGE OF THE PAVEMENT, AND 1 FOOT WEST OF THE RIGHT OF WAY FENCE LINE. THE MARK IS PASSED ENROUTE TO THE STATION. TO REACH THE STATION FROM THE FLAGPOLE AT THE INTERSECTION OF SOUTH LIVERMORE AVENUE AND 1ST STREET IN LIVERMORE GO SOUTHEAST ON SOUTH LIVERMORE AVENUE FOR 0.25 MILE TO EAST AVENUE. TURN LEFT, EAST, ON EAST AVENUE AND CONTINUE FOR 3.2 MILES TO THE MAIN GATE OF THE U.S. NAVAL AIR STATION ON LEFT AND A T ROAD INTERSECTION ON RIGHT. OBTAIN PERMISSION FROM THE GUARD AT ENTRANCE ON LEFT TO ENTER THE NAVAL STATION PROPERTY. THENCE TURN SOUTH AND CONTINUE SOUTHERLY FOR 0.15 MILE TO THE AZIMUTH MARK ON THE LEFT, EAST, SIDE OF THE PAVED ROAD. CONTINUE SOUTH ON PAVED ROAD FOR 0.7 MILE TO ITS END ON THE CREST OF THE RIDGE. TURN RIGHT, WEST, AROUND THE SOUTH SIDE OF TWO WATER TANKS, AND CONTINUE ON TRACK ROAD UP THE CREST OF THE RIDGE FOR 0.1 MILE TO THE FENCE LINE AND STATION SITE.
01/01/1963 by CGS (MONUMENTED)
RECOVERY NOTE BY COAST AND GEODETIC SURVEY 1963 (IRR) THE STATION MARK AND REFERENCE MARKS WERE RECOVERED IN GOOD CONDITION. THE AZIMUTH MARK WAS FOUND LEANING SLIGHTLY TO THE SOUTH. THE 1947 DESCRIPTION IS ADEQUATE WITH THE FOLLOWING ADDITIONS-- THE STATION IS INSIDE THE PROPERTY LINE OF THE LAWRENCE RADIATION LABORATORY (ONETIME U.S. NAVAL AIR STATION) BUT THE FENCE HAS BEEN SET IN AT THE STATION SITE SO THE MARK IS ACCESSIBLE FROM THE CULTIVATED FIELD TO THE WEST. TO REACH THE STATION FROM THE POST OFFICE AT LIVERMORE GO SOUTHEAST ON SOUTH LIVERMORE AVENUE 0.1 MILE TO A SIDE ROAD ON THE LEFT. TURN LEFT ONTO EAST AVENUE AND GO EAST 3.2 MILES TO THE SANDIA CORPORATION BUILDINGS ON THE RIGHT. TURN RIGHT, PASS THROUGH A LARGE PARKING AREA, AND GO SOUTH 0.8 MILE TO THE TOP OF THE HILL AND THE STATION. TO REACH THE AZIMUTH MARK FROM THE SANDIA CORPORATION PARKING AREA GO EAST ON EAST AVENUE 0.1 MILE TO A FARM ROAD ON THE RIGHT. TURN RIGHT AND GO SOUTH ON A GRAVELED ROAD ALONG THE EAST SIDE OF A CHAIN-LINK FENCE 0.1 MILE TO THE AZIMUTH MARK ON THE RIGHT.
01/01/1972 by NGS (MONUMENTED)
RECOVERY NOTE BY NATIONAL GEODETIC SURVEY 1972 (LFS) THE STATION MARK AND REFERENCE MARKS 1 AND 2 WERE RECOVERED IN GOOD CONDITION. THE DISTANCES TO REFERENCE MARKS 1 AND 2 MEASURED ON THIS DATE AGREED WITH THE 1947 MEASUREMENTS BUT THE DIRECTION MEASURED ON THIS DATE TO REFERENCE MARK 1 WAS 1 MIN 32 SEC LARGER AND THE DIRECTION TO REFERENCE MARK 2 WAS 2 MIN 11 SEC SMALLER THAN THE 1947 DIRECTIONS. THE AZIMUTH MARK WAS FOUND TO HAVE BEEN DESTROYED SO A NEW AZIMUTH MARK WAS ESTABLISHED ON THIS DATE. THE PREVIOUS DESCRIPTIONS ARE ADEQUATE WITH THE FOLLOWING ADDITION-- THE AZIMUTH MARK SET ON THIS DATE IS LOCATED AT THE NORTHWEST CORNER OF THE T-INTERSECTION OF GREENVILLE ROAD RUNNING NORTH AND SOUTH AND EAST AVENUE LEADING EAST AND IS A NGS REFERENCE MARK DISK STAMPED TESLA 1947 NO 3 1972 CEMENTED IN A DRILL HOLE IN THE TOP OF A 6-FOOT-SQUARE U-SHAPED CONCRETE CATCH BASIN AT THE NORTHWEST END OF A 24-INCH CORRUGATED METAL PIPE CULVERT UNDER GREENVILLE ROAD AND IS 44.0 FEET NORTH OF THE CENTER LINE OF EAST AVENUE, 33.0 FEET WEST OF THE CENTER LINE OF GREENVILLE ROAD, 1.3 FEET NORTH-NORTHEAST OF THE SOUTHWEST CORNER OF THE CATCH BASIN AND 1.5 FEET ABOVE THE GROUND. TO REACH THE AZIMUTH MARK SET ON THIS DATE FROM THE SANDIA CORPORATION PARKING AREA GO EAST ON EAST AVENUE 0.65 MILE TO THE INTERSECTION OF GREENVILLE ROAD AND THE MARK ON THE LEFT. AIRLINE DISTANCE AND DIRECTION FROM NEAREST TOWN--3-1/2 MILES ESE OF LIVERMORE

Control Text

  • The horizontal coordinates were established by classical geodetic methods and adjusted by the National Geodetic Survey in March 1994. The horizontal coordinates are valid at the epoch date displayed above. The epoch date for horizontal control is a decimal equivalence of Year/Month/Day.
  • The NAVD 88 height was computed by applying the VERTCON shift value to the NGVD 29 height (displayed under SUPERSEDED SURVEY CONTROL.)
  • The Laplace correction was computed from DEFLEC99 derived deflections.
  • The geoid height was determined by GEOID99.
