I think this is the first of this type for me, but thanks to the info from the earlier logs, I found it without a problem.

Getting used to finding these now. I would have missed this type even a few days ago!

I'm sure I must have missed this the first time I was here. I was looking for an old benchmark I had logged and happened to see Pal_Al's log here, so today I went back and sure enough there it was. The paint is rather faded but it's legible. Sure are a lot of railroad spike benchmarks in this area.

While walking back to the car a CDF Huey flew by overhead, which is the second time that's happened while I was logging a benchmark. The other time was at the CDF's Alma station.

Since it is about 365' from the house I decided to check it out and sure enough it was there. It had recently been uncovered by a survey team and marked with a red circle and the letter GPS. How convenient.

This area has recently been repaved. I noticed they paved right over a reflector in the street and suspect the same happened with the spike, although I didn't make a thorough search.

Control Text

  • The horizontal coordinates were established by GPS observations and adjusted by the National Geodetic Survey in March 1994. The horizontal coordinates are valid at the epoch date displayed above. The epoch date for horizontal control is a decimal equivalence of Year/Month/Day.
  • The NAVD 88 height was computed by applying the VERTCON shift value to the NGVD 29 height (displayed under SUPERSEDED SURVEY CONTROL.) The vertical order pertains to the superseded datum.
  • The X, Y, and Z were computed from the position and the ellipsoidal ht.
  • The Laplace correction was computed from DEFLEC99 derived deflections.
  • The ellipsoidal height was determined by GPS observations and is referenced to NAD 83.
  • The geoid height was determined by GEOID99.
