Happy Valentine's Day. Found it on Feb. 14, 2004 with David, Mary, Joe & Nancy as we were driving to Bethany Beach to walk around the town. You can't miss this one. Just above the front steps to the right. You can see this benchmark from the road. Great looking brick school.

This benchmark disk was found as described on the north wall of the school. It was located easily using the historic description, but note that the school is now the Lord Baltimore Elementary School. The posted coordinates are approximately 127 feet from the coordinates I recorded at the site. The disk is in very good condition and the date and designation are clearly legible.

Control Text

  • The horizontal coordinates were scaled from a topographic map and have an estimated accuracy of +/- 6 seconds.
  • The orthometric height was determined by differential leveling and adjusted by the National Geodetic Survey in June 1991.
  • The geoid height was determined by GEOID99.
  • The dynamic height is computed by dividing the NAVD 88 geopotential number by the normal gravity value computed on the Geodetic Reference System of 1980 (GRS 80) ellipsoid at 45 degrees latitude (g = 980.6199 gals.).
  • The modeled gravity was interpolated from observed gravity values.
