Recovered in good condition while walking through the area this morning. First benchmark I've found in Ocean City... although I've been here plenty of times before. This one just happened to be on my route, and I just happened to think to look for nearby BMs.

This benchmark disk was found on the west corner of the northwest wall of the downtown Ocean City Post Office. It was located with ease using the historic description; no changes are necessary. At the mark, my etrex receiver indicated 138 feet from the scaled datasheet coordinates. The disk is in excellent condition with all stamping legible.

SET IN A VERTICAL DRILL HOLE IN THE NORTHWEST BRICK WALL AT THE WEST CORNER OF THE OCEAN CITY POST OFFICE. 168 FEET NORTHEAST OF THE NORTHEAST CURB OF NORTH 4TH STREET, 12 FEET SOUTHEAST OF THE SOUTHEAST CURB OF PHILADELPHIA AVENUE, 1.1 FEET NORTHEAST OF THE WEST CORNER OF THE BUILDING AND 1.9 FEET ABOVE THE LEVEL OF THE SIDEWALK.

Control Text

  • The horizontal coordinates were scaled from a topographic map and have an estimated accuracy of +/- 6 seconds.
  • The orthometric height was determined by differential leveling and adjusted by the National Geodetic Survey in June 1991. WARNING-Repeat measurements at this control monument indicate possible vertical movement.
  • The geoid height was determined by GEOID99.
  • The dynamic height is computed by dividing the NAVD 88 geopotential number by the normal gravity value computed on the Geodetic Reference System of 1980 (GRS 80) ellipsoid at 45 degrees latitude (g = 980.6199 gals.).
  • The modeled gravity was interpolated from observed gravity values.
