Only the stem remains of the monument.

This station was found. The disk has been removed and the shank remains with a cross cut in it. Reference marks 1 and 2 were not found. Witness Mark 1 was found. It is 1-inch a drill hole that goes entirely through the rock. Witness Mark 2 was found. It is about 3 inches in diameter. The station is about 2 feet above Witness Mark 1 and about 5 feet above Witness Mark 2.

DESCRIBED BY US ENGINEERS 1925 (GLB) STATION IS SITUATED ON A PROMINENT LEDGE ABOUT 1/2 MILE SE OF THE CHAIN BRIDGE ON THE VIRGINIA SIDE OF THE POTOMAC RIVER. IT IS ABOUT 15 FEET FROM THE RIVERS EDGE AND 15 FEET FROM THE BASE OF THE BLUFF, AND ABOUT 12 FEET ABOVE THE WATER. STATION IS MARKED BY A UNITED STATES ENGINEERS MARK SET IN CEMENT IN A DRILL HOLE IN THE SOLID LEDGE. REFERENCE MARK NO. 1 IS A REGULAR REFERENCE MARK SET IN CEMENT IN A DEPRESSION IN THE LEDGE AT THE BASE OF THE BLUFF. REFERENCE MARK NO. 2 IS A PIECE OF REINFORCING STEEL SET IN A DRILL HOLE. WITNESS MARK NO. 1 IS A SMALL DRILL HOLE, AND WITNESS MARK NO. 2 IS A LARGE DRILL HOLE.

RECOVERY NOTE BY COAST AND GEODETIC SURVEY 1935 (JHB) RECOVERED AS DESCRIBED EXCEPT THAT THE U.S.E. DISK HAS BEEN BROKEN OFF AND THE STATION IS MARKED BY THE SHANK OF THE TABLET ON THE TOP OF WHICH A CROSS (+) HAS BEEN CUT. THE REFERENCE MARK WAS NOT FOUND. THE STATION APPROXIMATELY 20 FEET NE OF WHERE THE LETTERS B P R 39 IS PAINTED ON THE SIDE OF THE CLIFF.

RECOVERY NOTE BY COAST AND GEODETIC SURVEY 1947 (RMB) A NEW DESCRIPTION FOLLOWS--STATION IS SITUATED ON A PROMINENT ROCK LEDGE ABOUT 1/2 MILE SE OF CHAIN BRIDGE ON THE VIRGINIA BANK OF THE POTOMAC RIVER. IT IS ABOUT 15 FEET FROM THE EDGE OF THE RIVER AND ABOUT 15 FEET FROM THE BASE OF A ROCK BLUFF. IT IS 12 FEET ABOVE THE NORMAL RIVER LEVEL. STATION IS ABOUT 1/4 MILE NW OF A SMALL CREEK KNOWN AS DONALDSON RUN. IT IS MARKED BY A CROSS CUT IN THE TOP OF A COPPER SHANK FROM WHICH THE ORIGINAL U.S.E. DISK WAS APPARENTLY REMOVED. WITNESS MARK 1 IS A SMALL DRILL HOLE 7.88 FEET SW OF THE STATION. WITNESS MARK 2 IS A LARGE DRILL HOLE 8.48 FEET W OF THE STATION. NONE OF THE ORIGINAL REFERENCE MARKS WERE RECOVERED.

  • The horizontal coordinates were established by classical geodetic methods and adjusted by the National Geodetic Survey in November 1994.
  • The orthometric height was scaled from a topographic map.
  • The Laplace correction was computed from DEFLEC99 derived deflections.
  • The geoid height was determined by GEOID99.
