We found this totally by accident when looking at virtual caches and 200 million year old tree fossils in Washington Dc while on holiday from Australia. First ( perhaps only) Benchmark. Topped off a great day.

Recovered in good condition. Passing through to the Earthcache Mega event in Maine.

After the Ikebana exhibit this morning at the National Arboretum, we spent the afternoon geocaching and benchmarking around the National Mall. Found this one on a busy day outside the Natural History Museum.

Mark is in good condition. I stopped by and found it, as described, before visiting the museum.

Found it easily. This was my first benchmark, located in a nice place. Luckily, I was walking towards the Museum of American History from the National Gallery, so it was the perfect little break.

Looking Pretty Good.. Located on the Right side of the staircase leading up to the National Museum of Natural History.

Found as described. During the busy tourist season, very early Sunday morning is a great time to enjoy the majesty of the National Mall accompanied by birds, a few runners and homeless folk, and a hard-working Smithsonian employee.

This benchmark was about 60 meter from where our GPS said it should be but the directions given in the discription where very clear and percise and we found it without problem

Control Text

  • The horizontal coordinates were scaled from a topographic map and have an estimated accuracy of +/- 6 seconds.
  • The orthometric height was determined by differential leveling and adjusted by the National Geodetic Survey in June 1991.
  • The geoid height was determined by GEOID99.
  • The dynamic height is computed by dividing the NAVD 88 geopotential number by the normal gravity value computed on the Geodetic Reference System of 1980 (GRS 80) ellipsoid at 45 degrees latitude (g = 980.6199 gals.).
  • The modeled gravity was interpolated from observed gravity values.
