Found the chiseled cross as described thanks to previous logs and photos. We arrived to wait in the ticket line on the other side of the building before the bookstore opened, so it was easy to search for the faint mark without many people around. The "top step" is flush with the rest of the concrete, and the cross is at the base just to the left of the column on the right (north) side as you face the door.

Mrs. Seadog toured around DC on a beautiful day - was hard to get close to the cross to get a picture because of the workmen.

Pedaled down from the monument and scared off a few yutes (not intentionally) Mark is still faintly visible.

This took a good deal to spot especially with the changed situation here. Here is some updated datasheet information:

Found with my hubby jay 7!!

N 38° 53.373 W 077° 01.995

Found within a few minutes of searching. Description is dead on. My photos and coordinates posted. These old marks are very cool, well worth the search (and the history lesson).

Found - very interesting indeed

hard to spot :_

Did some exploring and caching while the rest of the family was busy with other things today. What a great area.

Found this benchmark whilst doing a rapid tourist trip around Washington. Our first mark of this type. Photo to come.

Didn't get it logged to the site until 6/2011 since I just now found my benchmark list (handwritten).

Missed this one yesterday, but came here today on the way to the Jefferson Memorial.

This joint is a lot nicer than when I was a kid.

Found the mark at the Washington Monument Ticket office. The mark is very tough to see, but is visible in the front entry.

Found a Smithsonian Boundary monument approximately 700' easterly from here in front of one of the Smithsonian buildings.

photoI=M 8=TIDAL BM PBPP (HV1838)

Found it on a trip to the Washington Monument.

Found on second try and after consulting previous logs and photos. The cross is very faint and there have been recent modifications to the building and surrounding area. The "top step" is now flush with the entry path (i.e., no other steps or ramp). It is possible that the step the cross is chiseled into may have been polished during construction making it even more faint.

Mark is nearly impossible to see in this photo. It's just barely to the right of the tip of the pen.

Bldg is open, found as described.

You can't get right to the building yet, they are still working on it. You can however, get close enough to see that the building and step are still in tack.

Found the building. Could not go inside

The lodge is under repair. Access is not possible at this time.

The building at which this is located is behind the security fence at the Washington Monument. We will have to try to get this one next time.

Found as described. The -- small lodge -- described is the refreshment stand just east of the Washington Monument on 15th Street. Chiseled cross is very faint, and about one inch by one inch.

Control Text

  • The horizontal coordinates were scaled from a topographic map and have an estimated accuracy of +/- 6 seconds.
  • The orthometric height was determined by differential leveling and adjusted by the National Geodetic Survey in June 1991.
  • The geoid height was determined by GEOID99.
  • The dynamic height is computed by dividing the NAVD 88 geopotential number by the normal gravity value computed on the Geodetic Reference System of 1980 (GRS 80) ellipsoid at 45 degrees latitude (g = 980.6199 gals.).
  • The modeled gravity was interpolated from observed gravity values. The observed gravity was obtained from relative gravimeter ties to the IGSN71 gravity network.
