Found while geocaching in the area today!

Found it about halfway between the White House and the Washington Monument.

The Meridian Stone benchmark is next to my cap with the Washington Monument in the background.

In great shape. We had a great tour guide and she got us where we needed to be while dodging tourist and traffic like a champ!

The area of the benchmark is completely torn up by the Park Service - unavailable for the time being.

Well, this turned out to be more exciting than expected. As I pedaled the mtb toward the Ellipse there was a sudden closure of area roads and large increase in the presence of police and secret service. E St was blocked and in swooped Marine One to land on the south lawn of the White House. The public was herded to the distant half and one side of the Ellipse while escort rotor wings flew overhead. Eventually the helicopter lifted off with the President and flew almost directly overhead. After the crowd cleared I was able to locate the Meridian as described. I think this mark should have some sort of official protection.

Un arrêt de 3 jours lors de notre voyage sur la côte Est des USA. On en profite pour faire quelques caches et ce benchmark.

Stop 3 days during our trip to the east coast of the USA. We took the opportunity to do some caches ans this benchmark.

Walked by this famous mark. Love these kinds of old markers!

Mark found as described. Due south of the White House.

Found after finding Mile Zero. The stone is still there. Crowds and security made this a chore to get to.

Logging some benchmarks after a long time on my list. Sorry for the late logging.

Out for a walk today. Was able to see it from a distance, will not be able to get to it soon as there is construction equipment ready to do the planned work here.

Found visiting Washington DC.

Found while on vacation

Grabbed this one after getting the zero milestone, Awesome!!

Recovered in good condition.

Notice that future stability of the station may be compromised as the current selected plan for the Ellipse Redesign program plans on raising the groundlevel within the Ellipse.

another benchmark.

yup did the long walk today :)

Saw over the fence

saw this one over the fence. would like to get a closer look.

Still visible, just wish we could get past the fence to get up close.

Did some exploring and caching while the rest of the family was busy with other things today. What a great area.

This mark is still within the fence but we could see it through the grass.

This one is still inside of fencing, but visible.

Found it out during my 23 cache frenzy in DC. As noted before, M.S. is inside of fencing at this time, however, still visible.

Found during lunch today. Stone is in area of fencing.

found while caching and on vacation

Out with teamobbie1 to explore around D.C. and the White House.

Come from the south because of the resodding. Was partially covered in grass clippings and just on the other side if the fence.

Recovered in good condition while strolling from the Zero Milestone to the Washington Monument.

Found on a lovely day in DC.

Found as described with damage noted in 2004 recovery - SE corner with all of letter "M" and most of letter "E" has been chipped off. Otherwise, in good condition.

We really enjoy Wash, DC, didn't realize there were so many benchmarks to log.

My daughter, Catherine, and I did a self walking tour today of Washington, D.C. from the Capitol to the Lincoln Memorial via the White House. We could not get close to the Meridian Stone as the entire area was blocked off.

Security restricts.

Found it but was hard to get to since there is security fencing up for the Easter Egg Roll tomarrow!

Got as close as possible to this marker a week before the inauguration. Lots of fences and barriers. It was a cold, foggy night and I saw stream rising from what I assume is the elusive manhole cover.

Security fencing is still a problem, unable to get to exact location. We were in this area looking for the Zero Mile virtual & the Zero Milestone benchmark.

Not able to get near because of security fencing. Got to approximatley 30 feet south of the station.

The meridian stone is located inside security fencing. Closest approach approximately 30 feet south. Photo was taken from there. Manhole cover mentioned is in photo.

Found as described. The stone sits an inch or so in the sod, and was completely covered by grass.

Control Text

  • The horizontal coordinates were established by GPS observations and adjusted by the National Geodetic Survey in June 1994.
  • The orthometric height was determined by differential leveling and adjusted by the National Geodetic Survey in February 1993.
  • The X, Y, and Z were computed from the position and the ellipsoidal ht.
  • The Laplace correction was computed from DEFLEC99 derived deflections.
  • The ellipsoidal height was determined by GPS observations and is referenced to NAD 83.
  • The geoid height was determined by GEOID99.
  • The dynamic height is computed by dividing the NAVD 88 geopotential number by the normal gravity value computed on the Geodetic Reference System of 1980 (GRS 80) ellipsoid at 45 degrees latitude (g = 980.6199 gals.).
  • The modeled gravity was interpolated from observed gravity values.
