N 38° 53.913 W 077° 02.291

Found as described thanks to previous logs and photos after a guided tour of the West Wing. Since we knew exactly where to look, we casually took a picture without attracting attention. The disk is in fair condition, with surface discoloration and scratches, but the markings are legible.

Found the "historic marker."

This entry was edited by stuffseeker1 on Friday, 16 August 2013 at 20:39:38 UTC.

Found while caching in the area.

Went for this one yesterday but there was a demonstration going on and the police were into overreaction mode so I could not even get close. Today, everything was nice and quiet. There were a couple of cops standing about 20 feet away so I told them I was going to touch the "historic marker" and invited them along. They watched me but let me do it.

Found while on vacation

Was walking from one office to another. All the construction is gone. Real easy to find. Guard came over to ask what I was doing and I told him that I was checking out this "historic marker". He had never noticed it before. I bet he will tell tourists about its historic importance, LOL

Another find in D.C.

Did some exploring and caching while the rest of the family was busy with other things today. What a great area.

Like previous finders, I too had to hunt due to the amount of construction work going on, but we were passing anyway, so it would have been rude not to look!

One of three benchmarks found today. Photos will be uploaded. Not able to get as close to the benchmark as usual, as it is behind several layers of fencing due to construction in the area, also visible in the photos. Mark is on the east side of the front of the Old Executive Office Building. Just to the east of the boarded-off area if you happen to visit soon.

Found on a fun day in DC

Found as described in good condition. While taking photos I left my bike leaning against the fence to the E of the mark, and a guard or policeman on a bike came by and asked me if I'd be leaving my bike there long. I explained what I was doing and assured him I'd be gone shortly; no problems after that.

View to the SW; mark in lower left of photo indicated by arrow, Old Executive Office building in background. Not visible in this image is the construction of viewing stands and the Presidential box for the inaugural festivities.

My daughter, Catherine, and I did a self walking tour today of Washington, D.C. from the Capitol to the Lincoln Memorial via the White House.

Easy find, excellent description. Thanks, Fort Rectus

Grabbed this one along with the one infront of the White House.

Found as described. Excellent mark in an excellent location. Famous stuff in all directions, as far as the eye can see (just don't stare at some of the stuff).

Looking SE, the mark is at the white notebook at center. The White House is a few yards to the left and the Old Exec Office Bldg is a few yards to the tight.

Beautiful building. French Neoclassical style?

We stumbled over this benchmark during our geocaching adventure in DC. We found this one while searching for answers to the Old Four Eyes Cache. Lots of security in front of the embassy. My son got a kick out of watching the news personnel broadcast from the grounds nearby....

Adjacent to the NW gate of the WHite house, across the street from the Blair house.

This wonderful disc is just a few meters from the gate where most official visitors enter the White House. It is on the base of the stone and iron fence surrounding the Eisenhower Executive Office Building (which veteran Washingtonians like me persist in calling the OEOB, for Old Executive Office Building). It is a gingerbread confection that, at a time when buildings like this were out of favor, came dangerously close to demolition.

Control Text

  • The horizontal coordinates were scaled from a topographic map and have an estimated accuracy of +/- 6 seconds.
  • The orthometric height was determined by differential leveling and adjusted by the National Geodetic Survey in June 1991.
  • The geoid height was determined by GEOID99.
  • The dynamic height is computed by dividing the NAVD 88 geopotential number by the normal gravity value computed on the Geodetic Reference System of 1980 (GRS 80) ellipsoid at 45 degrees latitude (g = 980.6199 gals.).
  • The modeled gravity was interpolated from observed gravity values.
