Hiho ^^

today, we visited Washington D.C. and also looked for some Caches. In the afternoon, we went to the Washington Monument but all the tickets have been sold out. When we arrived at the entrance, a ranger asked us if we want to go up, which we did
We had a nice view from up the top, although it was pretty rainy today.

I don't usually log benchmarks that are buildings, but I had to make an exception for this building. It is a big obelisk, after all. I like that they felt the need to embellish the scaffolding to represent large blocks. It actually looks kind of cool, especially at night.

We went to the White House first and then walk by the Washington Monument on the way to the Lincoln Memorial. It was a pretty cool site then but after we got done at the Lincoln Memorial we walked right up and touched the Washington Monument. That was awesome, you definatly have to get right up next to it to get a feel for its size.

Bigger than usual benchmark. No probe or measuring tape needed.
Didn't get it logged to the site until 6/2011 since I just now found my benchmark list (handwritten).

I don't know how I managed to miss logging this benchmark when I was here last year, but I guess I'm more into finding benchmarks now so on this trip I looked them up ahead of time.

Arguably the most famous benchmark of them all. There are also 4 benchmarks at the corners of the base. I wonder if those are listed??

Visiting from Arizona, brought my youngest son, another great place.

Saw this beautiful monument from the interstate while traveling with the USArmy! A bus load of Marines in full battle rattle were in the bus next to us and obvoiusly had been thru here before as most were asleep and not paying attention to anything!

Grin. Kinda the extreme opposite of a "nano cache" .

Found this one easy.

After searching high and low I asked for help and looked right at it...hmm

The top cap is made from aluminum, at the time a rare metal, valued about the same as silver. The cap was forged by William Frishmuth and a detailed history was printed in JOM.

This is more then likely the hardest one to find...ever. :)

Went to the top! (On the inside only though).

No matter how many times you see it, this monument never gets old. Although, since the renovation it is harder to convince folks the change in the color of the marble is a waterline :-)

(construction was haulted at one point and resulted in two different veins of Marble being used, the water line is about 1/3 of the way up the tower)

photoFrom here it looks like it's falling on me

This one is to easy.

13 years living in DC and i have only made the trip to the top twice. Gonna be three next weekend .

Hard to believe no one has noticed this one before ;-)

Well, it sort of feels like cheating. It didn't take a whole lot of effort to find this. To be honest, I was driving into work shortly before 6:00 a.m. Sunday morning - yes, I know, another honorable and hard-working government employee on the job for you at all hours - when I was stopped at a traffic light at 15th and Independence and noticed the monument lit up to my left. I grabbed the camera, rolled down the window, and fired off three frames before the light turned green. I adjusted the image a bit to bring out the trees and sky; actually, it all looked quite black.

A couple of years ago the Washington Monument was outfitted with scaffolding for repairs, and the National Geodetic Survey used the opportunity to make precise measurements of the position of this survey station, which is the apex of the monument. This had last been done in 1934, and obviously the technology has improved a bit since then.

(A little known fact: at the very top of the Washington Monument, the capstone is not stone at all, but is aluminum. At the time it was incredibly expensive and very futuristic. They even called it the metal of the moon.)

I encourage you to click here - http://www.ngs.noaa.gov/INFO/Washmon/ - to read about the NGS's Washington Monument GPS
Height Modernization Project which involved using state of the art equipment to measure the monument and record its position. Somewhere on their site there is a whole collection of pictures of the 1999 trip to the top, which I will add here if I can find it again; the raw material is here - http://www.ngs.noaa.gov/INFO/Washmon/cdrom/photos/ - but it is presented just as a directory list.
