First benchmark find.

Stone wall which the station should be set in is now higher than 1.5' as originally described. Unable to loacte evidence of station in current wall. RM 1 appears to be disturbed as mentioned in previous logs. Also a 1993 USGS recovery shows on current NGS datasheet which did not make it to GC:

RECOVERY NOTE BY US GEOLOGICAL SURVEY 1993
MT MARSHALL OVERLOOK ON SKYLINE DRIVE NEAR MILEPOST 19. RM1 SET ON CULVERT RETAINING WALL ABOUT 160' SOUTH-WEST OF MILEPOST 19 HAS BEEN DISTURBED DUE TO RECONSTRUCTION OF WALL. RM2, AFTER DILIGENT SEARCH, COULD NOT BE FOUND. AZM 1.95 MILES N/STATION ON RANGEVIEW OVERLOOK, DISK ON 3' X 3' CONC. SLAB 43' N/INSIDE OF STONE WALL, AND 200' (PACED) FROM A CULVERT PIPE IN A SOUTHERLY DIRECTION AS MEASURED ALONG THE CENTERLINE OF PARKWAY.

On 07-24-2006, found ET 29 WCE AZ MK [DC3347] at Range View Overlook and ET 29 WCE RM 1 [DC3348] both as described in the NGS Data Sheet.
As pointed out by garman, the arrow stamped on ET 29 WCE RM 1 points in the wrong direction - about 169° true instead of 78°. Probably not a coincidence that this error is near 90°.
Did not find the station mark anywhere along the stone guard wall.
On 08-23-2006, returned with a steel tape and searched unsuccessfully for ET 29 WCE RM 2 [DC3349], measuring from the located reference mark.

The orientation of the arrow stamped on the disk does not match the information in the NGS Data Sheet - about 169° true instead of 78°.

Found RM1 by accident while taking butterfly pictures. Didn't have the datasheets to look for the others, but will be back soon.

i found this one, right on top of a cement drain tube right accross skyline drive from one of the lookouts, it doesn't look like one of the other ones in the previus logs though??

Looked all over for this one. I suspect the wall has been rebuilt. From where I thought the mark should be I took a reading on RM1 and walked right to it. Curiously, the arrow on it was pointing the wrong way. Hmmm. Was not able to find RM2. Did find AZ mark. {Previous log is for the AZ mark].

Stumbled across this waypoint while on Skyline Drive in Shenandoah National Park. Took a picture of it before I even know the benchmark database existed on geocaching.com! It's in a grassy area near one of the overlook pulloffs.

Control Text

  • The horizontal coordinates were established by classical geodetic methods and adjusted by the National Geodetic Survey in November 1994.
  • The NAVD 88 height was computed by applying the VERTCON shift value to the NGVD 29 height (displayed under SUPERSEDED SURVEY CONTROL.)
  • The Laplace correction was computed from DEFLEC99 derived deflections.
  • The geoid height was determined by GEOID99.
