Spotted while working on the nearby virtual cache

Found this while looking at cannons near nearby virtual geocache .... Here with Terry headed to see relatives in Virginia ... Beautiful location

Stopped here to do the virtual, what a beautiful spot. Nice break from driving on the interstate.

Stood on this while the boys shot the cannon nearby after doing the virtual.

Found while doing the nearby virtual cache.

We stopped at Security to get a Parking Pass to get this and the other benchmark and were given a map and directions to drive up and park by the President's hose, being told only to not park in an Admin space. We easily found the Station and RM2.

Discovered with inxtricablfate and MAGTFPLANNER while cruising through WV and VA picking up specific caches to target Counties, Independent Cities and Delorme Pages. Benchmarks were collateral damage along the way we scooped up to add to the fun.

Discovered with inxtricablfate and DirtyD13 on a County/DeLorme/Independent City tour around (West) Virginia .

Just as plain as the day....first one I have seen in a while. Of course, I only intentionally searched for a few of these. Very neat to see, and especially the location.

went caching and the virtual brought me here.

Recovered in good condition. Averaged handheld coordinates read N 38° 09.194 W 079° 04.141 and an elevation of 1563 feet (476.4 meters). As noted in other recovery reports, this appears to be the same mark listed with PID HW3235 http://www.geocaching.com/mark/details.aspx?PID=HW3235

Reference mark 2 was easily spotted a short distance away. Other reference marks were not seen (nor sought).

Found in good shape while getting a local virtual.

Found while getting the virtual.

Its near a virtual in Staunton VA. In great shape.

Looked for this since I was going to Squirrel cache and had read others finding this while there.

Found this one, intentionally, while visiting SQUIRREL'S ROOST

Found this one accidentally while looking for Squirrell's Roost. My first benchmark find.

Ran upon this one while gathering information for a virtual geocache. Very interesting reading about the "two-fer" here.

Also found this one today while around the area of Squirrel's Roost!

Our first Benchmark find

Found this while doing the Squirrel cache.

Grabbed this one when I was doing Squirrels Roost.

This STAUNTON is the same station as HW3235, also called STAUNTON. Although this one is listed as vertical control, the elevation is not correct. See HW3235 for the correct elevation. The two stations/one disk situation was discussed in the Benchmark Forum http://forums.groundspeak.com/GC/index.php?showtopic=147481.

Mark is located, as described, at or near the highest spot of the campus of Mary Baldwin College, formerly a military academy, and it is near the Woodrow Wilson birthplace (recommended).

The 1933 description refers to three cannons. Apparently the area has been demilitarized, as only one field piece was observed.

The station disk, a standard USCGS triangulation disk, is set in concrete in the lawn between a flagpole and an artillery piece, referred to as a cannon in the description.

RM 1 was not searched for, as the 1945 description says the disk was removed.

RM 2 is set in the concrete base of the artillery piece and is very easy to find.

The AZ MK (RM 3) was destroyed according to the 1962 recovery report.

Failed to take good notes, but I believe this view is looking to the north. Arrow points to location of station disk at top of hill. Cannon can just be observed in the branches to the right.

Found this one while at the Squirrel's Roost.

In the area and just to check. Yeppers, still there!

Recovered as described. Stamped Staunton 1933.

I was here in June 2003 found the other but missed this one! Oh well, better late than never!

This was a nice surprise. A "two fer". Beautiful area. Benchmark in excellent condition.
