DESCRIBED BY COAST AND GEODETIC SURVEY 1871 (REH) STATION IS LOCATED ABOUT 3 MILES NORTHWEST OF COLLINSVILLE NEAR THE MIDDLE OF THE NORTH LINE OF NE 1/4 SEC. 20, T. 3 N., R. 8 W., ON LAND BELONGING IN 1880 TO CONRAD WITTE, WHOSE HOUSE IS EAST OF THE STATION. THE STATION IS ON THE NORTH SIDE OF THE TOP OF A VERY PROMINENT MOUND KNOWN LOCALLY AS SUGARLOAF MOUND, WHICH IS ON THE EDGE OF THE BLUFF OVERLOOKING THE AMERICAN BOTTOM AND ABOUT 150 OR 200 FEET ABOVE THE GENERAL LEVEL TO THE WESTWARD AND 50 FEET ABOVE THAT TO THE EASTWARD. THE STATION IS MARKED EXCEPT THAT THERE ARE NO REFERENCE MARKS. A SMALL PRIVATE CEMETERY IS JUST SOUTH OF THE STATION.

RECOVERY NOTE BY COAST AND GEODETIC SURVEY 1922 (JSB) THE STATION MARKS WERE FOUND TO BE IN GOOD CONDITION AND THE ORIGINAL DESCRIPTION IS GOOD, EXCEPT THE LAND IS NOW OWNED BY MRS. J.D.C. WITTE, WHO LIVES IN COLLINSVILLE, ILL. MARKS- THE STATION MARKS WERE LEFT AS FOUND AND A TABLET STATION MARK WAS SET IN TOP OF THE MARBLE POST MARKING THE STATION.

COMPANY BUILDING ON U.S. HIGHWAY 40, TURN NORTH ON STREET ALONG EAST SIDE OF SCHOOLHOUSE AND GO 0.4 MILE, JOG WEST 0.1 MILE AND CONTINUE ON MAIN-TRAVELED ROAD IN A NORTHERLY DIRECTION FOR 1.3 MILES FROM JOG TO T-INTERSECTION WITH NEW CONCRETE ROAD (U.S. HIGHWAY 40 BY-PASS), JOG WEST 0.1 MILE TO T-ROAD NORTH, ABOUT 50 YARDS EAST OF A SMALL SCHOOLHOUSE, GO NORTH ON T-ROAD 0.3 MILE TO NEW CONCRETE ROAD LEADING NORTH, WHICH AT PRESENT ENDS AT RAILROAD TRACK, GO NORTH ON NEW CONCRETE ROAD FOR 0.8 MILE TO DIRT T-ROAD EAST ALONG NORTH SIDE OF SUGAR LOAF MOUND, GO EAST TO TOP OF RISE AND GATE INTO PASTURE AT FOOT OF SUGAR LOAF MOUND, END OF TRUCK TRAVEL, THENCE TO TOP OF MOUND AND STATION. IT WAS LOWERED TO 3 FEET BELOW THE SURFACE AND THE SURFACE MARK LOWERED TO 2 INCHES ABOVE THE SURFACE BY THE RECONNAISSANCE PARTY.

RECOVERY NOTE BY COAST AND GEODETIC SURVEY 1934 (CAS) THIS STATION WAS RECOVERED IN APPARENTLY GOOD CONDITION AS ESTABLISHED IN 1871 AND RE-MARKED IN 1922. THE MARK WAS REPORTED TO HAVE BEEN LOWERED, AS THE TOP OF THE HILL WASHED AWAY AROUND IT. ABOUT 3 MILES NORTHWEST OF COLLINSVILLE, AND ABOUT 8 MILES SOUTH-SOUTHWEST OF EDWARDSVILLE, ABOUT 1/4 MILE WEST OF THE CORNER OF SECS. 16, 17, 20 AND 21, T. 3 N., R. 8 W., ON LAND OWNED BY BEN WITTE, ON THE NORTH SIDE OF THE TOP OF A VERY PROMINENT MOUND KNOWN LOCALLY AS SUGAR LOAF MOUND, WHICH IS ON THE EDGE OF A BLUFF OVERLOOKING THE MISSISSIPPI RIVER BOTTOM FROM EAST ST. LOUIS TO ALTON. THE MOUND IS ABOUT 200 YARDS EAST OF STATE ROUTE 157 AND ABOUT 100 YARDS NORTH OF WITTES HOUSE. THE TOP OF THE MOUND IS ABOUT 200 FEET ABOVE THE RIVER BOTTOM AND ABOUT 50 FEET ABOVE THE GENERAL LEVEL TO THE EASTWARD. THE MARK IS A STANDARD DISK SET IN TOP OF A 6-INCH SQUARE STONE POST WHICH PROJECTS 2 INCHES. IT IS NOT KNOWN IF THE UNDERGROUND MARK STILL EXISTS. TO REACH STATION FROM EDWARDSVILLE, GO SOUTHWEST ON ROUTE U.S. HIGHWAY 66 FOR ABOUT 5 MILES TO THE JUNCTION WITH STATE ROUTE 157, TURN SOUTH ON 157 FOR 4.2 MILES TO A PRIVATE ROAD TO THE LEFT, TURN LEFT, AND GO UP STEEP HILL 0.15 MILE TO A ROAD FORK. THE STATION IS ON THE TOP OF THE MOUND TO THE RIGHT. TO REACH FROM THE JUNCTION OF U.S. HIGHWAY 40 AND STATE ROUTE 157, GO NORTH ON 157 FOR ABOUT 6 MILES TO THE ABOVE MENTIONED PRIVATE ROAD. REFERENCE MARK NO. 1 IS WEST-SOUTHWEST OF THE STATION ON THE WEST SLOPE OF THE HILL, AT THE NORTHEAST APEX OF TRIANGLE FORMED BY THREE ROWS OF CATALPA TREES (THE TRIANGLE IS ABOUT 50 FEET ON A SIDE), ABOUT 15 FEET WEST OF THE BASE OF THE MOUND, IS 36 FEET BELOW THE STATION AND PROJECTS 2 INCHES. REFERENCE MARK NO. 2 IS NORTHWEST OF THE STATION, ON AN EAST-WEST FENCE LINE, AND ABOUT ON LINE WITH A LINE OF POWER-LINE POLES TO THE NORTH, AND 40 FEET BELOW THE STATION. THE MARK IS A STANDARD DISK SET IN TOP OF A 6-INCH SQUARE CONCRETE POST WHICH PROJECTS 5 INCHES. THE POST MARKS THE SOUTHWEST CORNER OF THE SOUTHEAST QUARTER OF SECTION 17, AND THE NORTHWEST CORNER OF THE NORTHEAST QUARTER OF SECTION 20. DISTANCE BETWEEN REFERENCE MARKS IS - 100.84 FEET. AZIMUTH MARK IS NORTHEAST OF THE STATION, 20 FEET NORTH OF THE CENTER LINE OF LANE LEADING TO FARMHOUSE, 47 FEET SOUTHWEST OF THE SOUTHWEST CORNER OF THE HOUSE, 2 FEET EAST OF FENCE CORNER, ADJACENT TO THE SOUTH FENCE LINE AROUND THE FARMHOUSE AND PROJECTS 3 INCHES. 110-FOOT TOWER AT EDWARDSVILLE AND 100-FOOT TOWERS AT COLLINSVILLE AND SHILOH ARE VISIBLE FROM THE GROUND.

IT IS ABOUT 3 MILES NW OF COLLINSVILLE, ON SUGAR LOAF MOUND, ABOUT 300 YARDS NE OF HIGHWAY 157, ON LAND OWNED AND OCCUPIED BY B. WITTE AND ABOUT 200 YARDS NW OF MR. WITTES HOUSE. THE MOUND IS A VERY WELL KNOWN LANDMARK, PLAINLY VISIBLE FROM HIGHWAY 157. THE STATION IS NEAR THE N END OF THE MOUND. SURFACE MARK IS A STANDARD DISK SET IN THE TOP OF A STONE POST 6 INCHES SQUARE, 26 INCHES LONG AND PROJECTING 3 INCHES ABOVE THE GROUND. UNDERGROUND MARK IS THE APEX OF AN EARTHENWARE PYRAMID 36 INCHES BELOW THE SURFACE. TWO REFERENCE MARKS AND AN AZIMUTH MARK WERE ESTABLISHED IN 1934 AS FOLLOWS- REFERENCE MARK NO. 1 IS A STANDARD DISK SET IN THE TOP OF A BLOCK OF CONCRETE, 12 INCHES SQUARE AND PROJECTING 3 INCHES ABOVE THE GROUND. IT IS NEAR THE NW APEX OF A TRIANGLE FORMED BY 3 ROWS OF SMALL CATALPA TREES, AND IS 90 FEET FROM THE STATION, S 62 DEG W. REFERENCE MARK NO. 2 IS A STANDARD DISK SET IN THE TOP OF A 6- BY 6-INCH CONCRETE POST PROJECTING ABOUT 6 INCHES ABOVE THE SURFACE. THE CONCRETE POST MARKS THE PROPERTY LINES IN AN E-W FENCE LINE NEAR THE POWER LINE POLE WHERE THE LINE TURNS TO THE NE. AZIMUTH MARK IS ABOUT 0.3 MILE FROM THE STATION N 84 DEG E. IT IS 20 FEET N OF THE CENTER LINE OF THE PRIVATE ROAD LEADING TO THE FARMHOUSE, 47 FEET SW FROM THE SW CORNER OF THE HOUSE.

RECOVERY NOTE BY NATIONAL GEODETIC SURVEY 1971 (LFS) THE STATION MARK, REFERENCE MARKS AND THE 1961 AZIMUTH MARK WERE RECOVERED AND FOUND IN GOOD CONDITION. THE 1961 DESCRIPTION IS GOOD. THE 1961 AZIMUTH MARK WAS REPORTED AS NOT FOUND BUT MARK WAS FOUND AS DESCRIBED AND IN GOOD CONDITION. ANOTHER WITNESS POST WAS SET 1 FOOT SOUTH OF THE AZIMUTH MARK. THE PROPERTY OWNER SHOULD BE CONTACTED BEFORE ANY ATTEMPT TO WORK ON THIS STATION. THE STATION WAS NOT OCCUPIED AT THIS TIME DUE TO STRONG WINDS. AIRLINE DISTANCE AND DIRECTION FROM NEAREST TOWN- ABOUT 3 MILES NORTHWEST OF COLLINSVILLE.

RECOVERY NOTE BY NATIONAL GEODETIC SURVEY 1976 (CLN) THE UNDERGROUND STATION MARK (EARTHENWARE PYRAMID), REFERENCE MARKS 1 AND 2 AND THE AZIMUTH MARK 1961 WERE RECOVERED AND FOUND IN GOOD CONDITION. THE PROPERTY OWNER STATED THAT THE SURFACE STATION MARK WAS COMPLETELY REMOVED BY VANDELS AND HE HAD REPORTED THIS DISTRUCTION AS SOON AS HE NOTICED THE SURFACE MARK MISSING. THIS DATE A NEW SURFACE STATION MARK WAS SET DIRECTLY OVER THE UNDERGROUND STATION MARK AND THE DIRECTIONS WERE CHECKED TO SEVERAL OBJECTS PREVIOUSLY OBSERVED. THE DISTANCES TO THE REFERENCE MARKS WERE NOT RE-MEASURED THIS DATE. ABOUT A 5 FOOT HIGH LINE OF SIGHT WAS CLEARED TO THE AZIMUTH MARK AND REFERENCE MARK 2 THIS DATE. THE LINE OF SIGHT TO REFERENCE MARK 1 WAS NOT CLEARED THIS DATE. THE DIRECTIONS TO SEVERAL NEAR BY OBJECTS, (LISTED ABOVE), WERE OBSERVED FOR ASSISTANCE IN RECOVERY OF THE STATION IN THE FUTURE, DUE TO THE SLOPE OF THE HILL AND THE GROWTH OF VINES, BRUSH AND TREES. THE 1961 DESCRIPTION IS ADEQUATE FOR RECOVERY OF THE STATION. NOTE--THE PROPERTY OWNER, MR. BEN WITTE, RT. 3, BOX 49, COLLINSVILLE ILLINOIS, 62234, MUST BE CONTACTED BEFORE ANY ATTEMPT TO WORK ON THIS STATION AND HE LIVES IN THE FARM HOUSE, ON THE EAST SIDE OF STATE HIGHWAY 157, JUST BELOW THE THE MOUND THE STATION IS LOCATED ON. FOLLOWING ARE NOTES FOR THE NEW STATION MARK. THE SURFACE STATION MARK IS A STANDARD DISK STAMPED SUGAR LOAF 1871 1976, SET IN THE TOP OF A 12 INCH ROUND CONCRETE POST THAT IS ABOUT 12 INCHES BELOW THE GROUND SURFACE AND IS IN THE NORTH HALF OF THE MOUND AND IN A SMALL DEPRESSION. FOUR PIECES OF 5/8 INCH RE-BAR WERE PLACED IN THE CONCRETE POST. THE UNDERGROUND MARK IS ABOUT 3-1/2 FEET BELOW THE GROUND SURFACE. AIRLINE DISTANCE AND DIRECTION FROM NEAREST TOWN--COLLINSVILLE, ABOUT 3.0 MILES NORTHWEST.

HE LIVES IN THE 2ND HOUSE ON LEFT SOUTH OF THE ENTRANCE ROAD TO THE STATION. HE IS VERY ADAMANT ABOUT USING THE STATION, THEREFORE, NO ONE SHOULD VISIT THE STATION UNLESS HE HAS BEEN CONTACTED.   • The horizontal coordinates were established by classical geodetic methods and adjusted by the National Geodetic Survey in October 1999.
  • The orthometric height was determined by GPS observations and a high-resolution geoid model.
  • The X, Y, and Z were computed from the position and the ellipsoidal ht.
  • The Laplace correction was computed from DEFLEC99 derived deflections.
  • The ellipsoidal height was determined by GPS observations and is referenced to NAD 83.
  • The geoid height was determined by GEOID99.
