I've been waiting for an opportunity to get inside the fence and discover it. Finally got the chance while volunteering at the commodities distribution Friday morning. Pictures came out blurry, but it's clean and safe.

Recovered in good condition.

This was a great find! The benchmark is inside a security fence surrounding the building in Florence that now houses it's very rarely used Senior Center. I got lucky that the part time janitor was arriving to the check the building when I got there and he was intrigued by my quest. He let me into the secured area and together we found the benchmark embedded in the concrete right next to the building. He's been working there for years and never noticed it, even though it was in plain view. Note that the benchmark is dated 1925, nearly twenty years older than the other benchmarks in the area.

Control Text

  • The horizontal coordinates were scaled from a topographic map and have an estimated accuracy of +/- 6 seconds.
  • The orthometric height was determined by differential leveling and adjusted by the National Geodetic Survey in June 1991.
  • The geoid height was determined by GEOID99.
  • The dynamic height is computed by dividing the NAVD 88 geopotential number by the normal gravity value computed on the Geodetic Reference System of 1980 (GRS 80) ellipsoid at 45 degrees latitude (G = 980.6199 gals.).
  • The modeled gravity was interpolated from observed gravity values.
