My eTrex Legend gave N 38 49.253 W 121 11.620 and elevation 393 feet while sitting next to the mark, which is set in the top of a big slab of the local natural granite. For those who know Loomis, the general location is behind the Beacon station on Taylor Road. Using the 1969 description I looked for the power line crossing, then looked along a line 25' from the tracks until I spotted the mark. There's been a lot of dirt moved around here recently and it appears there might have been a new fiber optic cable laid along the tracks in the last few months. The mark is easily accessible and in great shape.

DESCRIBED BY COAST AND GEODETIC SURVEY 1969 7.8 MI NE FROM ROSEVILLE. 7.8 MILES NORTHEAST ALONG THE SOUTHERN PACIFIC COMPANY RAILROAD FROM THE STATION AT ROSEVILLE, 0.25 MILE NORTH OF THE CROSSING OF KING ROAD, 3 RAILS SOUTH OF A SWITCH STAND, AT THE CROSSING OF A POWER LINE, IN THE TOP OF THE WEST END OF A 20- BY 40-FOOT GRANITE ROCK OUTCROP WHICH PROJECTS ABOUT 3 FEET ABOVE THE GROUND, 24.5 FEET EAST OF THE EAST RAIL OF THE WESTBOUND TRACK, 47.3 FEET SOUTHWEST OF THE SOUTHWEST CORNER OF A METAL BUILDING WHICH IS ATTACHED TO THE SOUTH SIDE OF A BRICK BUILDING, 2 1/2 FEET WEST OF A POINT IN LINE WITH A ROW OF TELEPHONE POLES, 49 FEET NORTH OF A POWER POLE WITH STEEL CLIMBING PEGS, 39 1/2 FEET SOUTH OF A TELEPHONE POLE, AND ABOUT 2 1/2 FEET LOWER THAN THE TRACK.

  • The horizontal coordinates were scaled from a topographic map and have an estimated accuracy of +/- 6 seconds.
  • The orthometric height was determined by differential leveling and adjusted by the National Geodetic Survey in June 1991.
  • The geoid height was determined by GEOID99.
  • The dynamic height is computed by dividing the NAVD 88 geopotential number by the normal gravity value computed on the Geodetic Reference System of 1980 (GRS 80) ellipsoid at 45 degrees latitude (G = 980.6199 gals.).
  • The modeled gravity was interpolated from observed gravity values.
