Must Read!

Benchmarks may be on private property or in dangerous locations. Obey local laws. By using the services on Geocaching.com you agree to this disclaimer.

Gotta be in the top ten of erroneous (read bogus) logged marks. Ran across it while snooping back on a loggers profile.

The description of the location matches perfectly, but the stamping on the mark does not. Hmmm. I've consulted several benchmark maps, it seems to match.

Deleted my "found" note from April 2010 because this disk is no longer here according to the NGS Documented History descriptions.

I've seen this happen with other benchmarks. Somebody puts a GeoCache near a disk, and then the GeoCachers flock to it and incorrectly log the benchmark: again, and again, and again. There is no reasoning with them. They saw a metal disk, and that's the end of it for them.
So, with my forehead in my hand, I shall say through a tired sigh...

YOU DID NOT FIND THIS BENCHMARK!!!!

JS2353, BM USE RESET 1964 is gone. It isn't here. It is not. You will have better luck trying to find aliens and UFOs than you will trying to find JS2353.

This morning I decided to attempt Sacramento's Second Webcam Cache.

First up was a benchmark, which has turned out to be this one. I am not sure this is the correct one, but it seems to be the default one by others, so I will claim it. The posted coordinates were so far off, it was a little tricky to find this one, but I did. The information I would offer is that to view the other photos is helpful before you go, otherwise I might not have found it.

Call in the experts, something fishy is going on here.

Found while working on the webcam series.

Recovered in good condition.

It was fun to read all the controversy. How about adding to it, by including this photo, taken at the SAME coordinates!

photowhere was this one?

Found this as part of "Sacramento's Second Webcam Cache".

Found this BM while getting the webcam "Sacramento's Second Webcam Cache"

Found while working on "Sacramento's Second Webcam Cache", GCH5EF. I believe this to be the correct BM for the cache. The BM recently received some overspray from nearby painting.

Yup! There it is! We found it quite a ways away from the coords we had but there it was! Found while in town to get the Web Cam cache.

Out with Mckenzie~Binns. Good day.

After Sacramento's 2nd WebCam Cache.

photoYep, This is the one we found!

As noted in the CURRENT datasheet, and also by EWDaron10 on 02/26/2005
In the station recovery in 2003 by CA Dept of Water Resources employee MSG
"MONUMENT DESTROYED BY THE CONSTRUCTION OF EMBASSY SUITES."

I found this while in the downtown area to teach a class.

As noted by several this mark is not the one that is featured in the Web cam series cache. The numbers on the ground next to the mark are not visible at this time.

Finally going the Sac 2nd webcam series this early AM morning. -40-

Lots of controversy over this BM... it does seem to not be this one, but this is the one that everyone is logging for Sacramento's Second Webcam Cache.. so... here I go too. I couldn't see the numbers, but thanks to some of the older pics, I was able to acquire the info needed!

Boy this was a work out finding the location of this one. Jasc the Brat and the Schooltch4daz.

This was a chore and we finally found it. Schooltch4daz and the Brat.

First benchmark on WebCam cache.

found while doing Sacramentos second webcam cache

ditto of previous entries... "I know this isn't really the benchmark (original was destroyed), but I need to log it for the web-cam cache."
- I now plan to go back and try to find the other one that HYNR spotted.

Well as others have pointed out, this benchmark is not exactly the one we're looking for, but it is close, and it is what we used for the Webcam cache.

I know this isn't really the benchmark (original was destroyed), but I need to log it for the web-cam cache.

Found this on a VERY WINDY day...river was really high!

TRAKD Was Here!

Found while working on Sacramento's Second Webcam Cache. Our first benchmark! "The Pirate & The Wench"

Found with Hynr while doing 47Dad47's webcam cache.

Found a bridge benchmark near the posted coordinates (as others also did before me), but I also spotted a benchmark in the roadway below (on portion of the east side curbing that is flush with the pavement) which is more likely to be at the correct location. I could not get to it due to the traffic.

Jeo was here
Used 47Dad47's time machine to visit this benchmark before the construction

Since itsbeing used as part of a cache I will mark it as found. Oh the rules!

After reading all the logs on this (planning a trip to Old Sac), I checked the datasheet on the NGS web site. It shows as follows:

STATION RECOVERY (2003)
RECOVERY NOTE BY CA DEPT OF WATER RES 2003 (MSG)
MONUMENT DESTROYED BY THE CONSTRUCTION OF EMBASSY SUITES.

Did not find with TeamAlamo and Wyldwood while working on "Sacramento's Second Webcam Cache". The marker that is being logged as found is not the correct marker. It does not have the correct stamping and it is not in the correct location as described. Higway and hotel construction has removed or covered this marker.

See 4wheeler's note.

Part of Sacramento's Second Webcam Cache hunt.

Got this one doing the first stage of Sacramento's Second Webcam cache. Had to leave before I got to Giant Bike Chain, and couldn't keep going on the webcam cache. I'll be back...pictures to follow.

Looking at the UCGS site, DWR said this one was gone in 2003...I wonder if all those naysayers are right!

Did this as first part of Sacramento's Second Webcam Cache. We've decided to log this as a "Didn't Find It" because we aren't convinced the benchmark we and others have found is actually the benchmark described. We have attached a close-up photo...you can clearly read it. The benchmark found says "National Ocean Survey" and is stamped with two sets of numbers--6174E, which we assume is the benchmark number, and 1983, which we assume is the year it was monumented. However, THIS benchmark (JS2353) is described as marked with "BM USE RESET 1964" and having been monumented in 1964 by the Department of Defense. None of this information matches. Furthermore, this is the only benchmark in 47Dad47's Webcam Cache that he had to change the coordinates for. The JS2353 coordinates are enough off that we think it could represent about a 20 foot or more difference. Which brings us to our next point...JS2353 is described as being on the east curb of Front Street. As has been recorded previously, Front Street no longer exists, so it's hard to know, but 47Dad47 speculates that the benchmark FOUND would have actually been on the west side of Front Street. So that doesn't match up. And we'd even go further and say that Front Street, sort of by definition, would have fronted the railroad tracks all the way along...not CROSSED the tracks and run right along the river banks. So we think the original Front Street was where the Embassy Suites is now, and that JS2353 was probably destroyed when the Embassy Suites was built. So...we're logging it as a didn't find, but it was still lots of fun for doing the webcam cache. Thanks, 47Dad47!!!

photoBenchmark in Question
Is this JS2353???

Located this benchmark while looking for the Giant Bike Chain cache. Took the picture with my cell phone camera. I knew that camera would come in useful someday!

Found this as part of Sacramento's Second Webcam Cache. My GPSr was swinging wildly all over the place. I found it almost by accident.

This was the first stop on Sacramento's Second WebCam Cache but we did not go any further.

Found it while on my way back from Arden, trying to avoid the traffic.

It looks like it is more on the west curb of front street than the east curb. That part of front street is no longer there.

Control Text

 • The horizontal coordinates were scaled from a topographic map and have an estimated accuracy of +/- 6 seconds.
 • The orthometric height was determined by differential leveling and adjusted by the National Geodetic Survey in June 1991.
 • This Tidal Bench Mark is designated as VM 11390 by the Center for Operational Oceanographic Products and Services.
 • The geoid height was determined by GEOID99.
 • The dynamic height is computed by dividing the NAVD 88 geopotential number by the normal gravity value computed on the Geodetic Reference System of 1980 (GRS 80) ellipsoid at 45 degrees latitude (G = 980.6199 gals.).
 • The modeled gravity was interpolated from observed gravity values.
