Found during a heavy rain in downtown Phila.

Observed today , July 4th.
A homeless man named Troy had setup shop at the station (pure coincidence) and I chatted briefly with him but felt taking photos would not be appropriate

This is my first benchmark ever. It has been an adventure to locate such real benchmark and physically visit it. Thanks for this experience.

This week I travelled to Philadelphia from Atlanta in order to attend a conference, and in my free time I have enjoyed walking throughout the city and discovering some geocaches and benchmarks. As described in the logs, this benchmark was an easy find in Chinatown at 1010 Arch Street. It is embedded in a step and appears to remain in good condition.

I had taken the train over to meet Fuzzy for lunch today. Later this afternoon, we met up to do some exploring and grab a few benchmarks. This was the last of the day for us. While I was busy studying my paper printouts, notes and benchmark phone app, Chuck simply walked up and found the disc! We then went over and did a quick tour of Chinatown, one of our favorite spots here in the city.

Bassett's Ice Cream at Reading Terminal Market + a benchmark find. It was a great afternoon for a walk around the city with my kids. I found this one without any trouble as described.

Another BM that I have found twice because I forget to log them and then forget where I put the photos. I like marks that are built into other structures like this. Mark recovered in good condition.

It's 1010 Arch Street, not 110 Arch Street

Found at the west end of the top of the step leading into 110 Arch Street, on the south side of Arch Street. Handheld coordinates are N39-57.214 W075-09.408.

Looking south at the door at 110 Arch Street (there is a 108 Arch but there is no 112), the mark is at the white notebook to the right of the door.

This is a tricky one. I'm not sure we were in the right spot, so I'll log this one as a note and try to come back when it's warmer and when I've done more research. There was a building numbered 1008-1010 Arch Street, but we saw no 1010-1012. We checked the entranceways, but both were completely covered in outdoor carpeting (and yes, it was glued down -- I checked). Could this beautiful little disk lie beneath the carpet?

Control Text

  • The horizontal coordinates were scaled from a topographic map and have an estimated accuracy of +/- 6 seconds.
  • The orthometric height was determined by differential leveling and adjusted by the National Geodetic Survey in June 1991.
  • This Tidal Bench Mark is designated as VM 369 by the Center for Operational Oceanographic Products and Services.
  • The geoid height was determined by GEOID99.
  • The dynamic height is computed by dividing the NAVD 88 geopotential number by the normal gravity value computed on the Geodetic Reference System of 1980 (GRS 80) ellipsoid at 45 degrees latitude (g = 980.6199 gals.).
  • The modeled gravity was interpolated from observed gravity values.
