Documented History (by the NGS)

01/01/1933 by CGS (MONUMENTED)
DESCRIBED BY COAST AND GEODETIC SURVEY 1933 (GLA) THIS STATION IS ON THE SUMMIT OF WHAT IS LOCALLY KNOWN AS BURDEN HILL, ABOUT 5.5 MILES SE OF SALEM. AND 9 MILES SW OF WOODSTOWN. THE PROPERTY IS OWNED BY DR. NATHANIEL HIRES, MR. CHARLES HIRES, MR. ABNER HIRES, AND MRS. MARY HIRES SPENCER. THE STATION IS ABOUT 0.15 MILE S OF ROUTE 49, ON THE TOP OF THE HILL, WHICH IS COVERED BY A HEAVY GROWTH OF OAKS. IT IS BESIDE A WOOD ROAD LEADING OVER THE TOP OF THE HILL, 13.5 FEET ESE OF TRIANGLE BLAZED SMALL TRIPLE OAK. 20 FEET SW OF AN 8-INCH TRIANGLE BLAZED OAK. AND 18 FEET N OF A 5-INCH TRIANGLE BLAZED OAK. THE STATION WAS RE-MARKED BY BUILDING UP AROUND THE OLD MARK WHICH WAS A 6-INCH BY 6-INCH GRANITE MONUMENT. THE MARK PROJECTS 10 INCHES. (NOW STANDARD DISK) REFERENCE MARK NO.1 IS SE OF THE STATION. 75 FEET ESE OF THE 5-INCH BLAZED OAK. AND 90 FEET SSE OF THE 8-INCH BLAZED OAK. THE MARK PROJECTS 5 INCHES. IT WAS SET IN 1933 ACCORDING REFERENCE MARK NO.2 IS SW OF THE STATION. 73 FEET SW OF THE TRIPLE OAK. 73 FEET WSW OF THE 5-INCH BLAZED OAK. AND 18 FEET N OF THREE CLOSELY GROUPED 6-INCH OAKS. IT WAS SET IN 1933 TO REACH FROM SALEM, GO SE ON ROUTE 49, 5.3 MILES (1.9 MILES PAST QUINTON) TO THE W SLOPE OF BURDEN HILL. HERE TURN BACK SHARP RIGHT AROUND THE E END OF THE GUARD RAIL FENCE (TRIANGLE BLAZE ON A LARGE OAK) ON A WOOD ROAD. FOLLOW THIS ROAD ABOUT 0.25 MILE TO THE SUMMIT OF THE HILL AND THE STATION. A 90-FOOT TOWER WAS USED.
01/01/1965 by CGS (GOOD)
RECOVERY NOTE BY COAST AND GEODETIC SURVEY 1965 (JCB) STATION WAS RECOVERED AS DESCRIBED AND ALL MARKS WERE FOUND TO BE IN GOOD CONDITION. THE NEW YORK TELEPHONE COMPANY REQUESTED THAT THE STATION AND REFERENCE MARK NO. 1 BE MOVED BECAUSE OF THE CONSTRUCTION OF A RELAY TOWER, SO STATION BURDEN 3 AND REFERENCE MARK NO. 3 WERE ESTABLISHED AND STATION BURDEN 2 AND REFERENCE MARK NO. 1 WERE THEN DESTROYED. THE DISTANCE TO REFERENCE MARKS 1 AND 2 WERE CHECKED AND FOUND TO BE CORRECT AND THE DIRECTION BETWEEN THE TWO MARKS WAS CHECKED AND FOUND TO BE CORRECT. AIRLINE DISTANCE AND DIRECTION FROM NEAREST TOWN 5-1/2 MILES SOUTHEAST OF SALEM.
01/01/1973 by NGS (GOOD)
RECOVERY NOTE BY NATIONAL GEODETIC SURVEY 1973 (CLN) THE DISTANCE TO BURDEN 3 IS 16.379 METERS, 53.74 FEET W. THE DISTANCE TO BURDEN 2 RM 2 IS 23.081 METERS, 75.73 FEET SW. THE STATION SURFACE DISK WHICH WAS SET IN 1933 WAS DESTROYED. REFERENCE MARK TWO WAS RECOVERED AND FOUND IN GOOD CONDITION. AFTER A SEARCH WAS MADE THE 6 BY 6 GRANITE BLOCK, WHICH WAS DESCRIBED IN THE 1933 DESCRIPTION, WAS RECOVERED 2 FEET BELOW THE SURFACE. THERE WAS NO CENTER POINT MARKED ON THE GRANITE BLOCK, THEREFORE THE EXACT POINT COULD NOT BE DETERMINED. THERE WAS A NEW TRIANGULATION STATION BURDEN 3 1965 ESTABLISHED NEAR THIS STATION. (SEE DESCRIPTION THEREOF) THIS STATION WAS NOT OCCUPIED AT THIS DATE NOR WAS IT RE-MARKED, REASON FOR THIS WAS, AS FOLLOWS. THERE WAS NOT SUFFICIENT ANGLES OR DISTANCES TO DETERMINE THE EXACT OLD POINT AND THERE WAS THE NEW TRIANGULATION WHICH WAS ESTABLISHED. A NEW DESCRIPTION OF THIS POINT FOLLOWS IN CASE IT MAY BE OF USE IN THE FUTURE. THE POINT IS LOCATED ABOUT 9 AIRLINE MILES SOUTHWEST OF WOODSTOWN, ABOUT 5-1/2 MILES SOUTHEAST OF SALEM AND ON WHAT IS LOCALLY KNOWN AS BURDEN HILL. IT IS JUST NORTHWEST OF A NEWLY CONSTRUCTED A.T. AND T. RELAY TOWER. THE PROPERTY IS OWNED BY THE A.T. AND T. CO. TO REACH THE STATION FROM THE POST OFFICE IN SALEM, GO SOUTHERLY ON STATE HIGHWAY 5.7 MILES TO A SIDE ROAD RIGHT. TURN RIGHT AND GO NORTHWEST UPHILL ON A PAVED ROAD FOR 0.2 MILE TO THE NORTHWEST SIDE OF THE RELAY TOWER AND THE STATION SITE. THE STATION IS THE GRANITE BLOCK WHICH IS APPROXIMATE 6 BY 6 INCHES SQUARE AT THE TOP AND THE HEIGHT OF IT IS UNKNOWN. THE GRANITE BLOCK HAS NO CENTER POINT NOR IS THERE ANY CARVINGS ON IT. IT IS 2 FEET BELOW THE SURFACE OF THE GROUND, 92.5 FEET NORTH OF THE SOUTHWEST CORNER OF A WIRE FENCE SURROUNDING THE RELAY TOWER, 31.6 FEET NORTH OF THE NORTHWEST CORNER, 54 FEET EAST OF THE WITNESS POST WHICH IS NEAR TRIANGULATION STATION BURDEN 3 1965 AND 17 FEET NORTHWEST OF THE NORTHEAST EDGE OF THE FENCE SURROUNDING THE RELAY TOWER. ALL OTHER MARKS ARE DESCRIBED IN THE DESCRIPTION FOR TRIANGULATION STATION BURDEN 3 1965. AIRLINE DISTANCE AND DIRECTION FROM NEAREST TOWN 5-1/2 SOUTHEAST OF SALEM.
