This spire is absolutely marvelous. A few months back they had market Street closed down to make some updates to the spire. I was able to snap a picture of the new spire in place from my work truck.

There weren’t really any caches I needed in the area and I wasn’t quite ready to head home yet, so I decided to grab a few Benchmarks. It was the perfect day for this, as it was very cold, so I simply drove around snapping pictures.

Recovered in good condition - NGS datasheet description from 1975 is as follows:

THE STATION IS THE TOP OF THE CROSS, THE SPIRE IS ABOUT 184 FEET HIGH, THE SPIRE AND CHURCH ARE PAINTED WHITE AT THIS TIME. THE CHURCH IS NOW THE FIRST PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH OF SALEM. THE SPIRE IS VERY SHARP POINTED AND ABOUT 50 FEET ABOVE THE BUILDING. TO REACH FROM THE CENTER OF SALEM, TAKE HWY. 45 NORTH FOR 0.1 MILE AND STATION ON RIGHT. THE SPIRE WAS USED IN A 3-POINT FIX TO VERIFY ITS ORIGINAL POSITION.

  • The Laplace correction was computed from DEFLEC99 derived deflections.
