Over grown Benchmark

Also found JU3260 (ACTON 2 RM 2), CB1172 (ACTON 2 RM 3) and AH7176 (ACTON 2 AZ MK RESET; handheld coordinates N 39 38.245 W 75 23.233). See logging for JU3260 for photographs of the other disks. As described in the 1990 report, the disk is recessed a foot below the ground, but it is not buried. The ground around it had been cleared and it is exposed to the surface.

DESCRIBED BY COAST AND GEODETIC SURVEY 1933 (GLA) THIS STATION IS ON LAND OWNED BY RAY S. WARE, ABOUT 6 MILES NE OF SALEM, 1-3/4 MILES SW OF SHARPTOWN. AND 3 MILES A LITTLE S OF W OF WOODSTOWN. THE STATION IS IN A CULTIVATED FIELD ON THE S SIDE OF THE ROAD. 40 FEET W OF A LARGE WILD CHERRY TREE. 37 FEET SSW OF THE CENTER LINE OF THE ROAD. 25 FEET S OF TELEPHONE POLE 223-35. 32.5 FEET SSE OF A SMALL ELM. AND 120 FEET W OF THE E FENCE OF THE FIELD. THE MARK IS 14 INCHES UNDERGROUND. SURFACE, UNDERGROUND AND REFERENCE MARKS ARE STANDARD BRONZE DISKS SET IN CONCRETE. REFERENCE MARK NO.1 IS E OF THE STATION. 82 FEET ESE OF THE CHERRY TREE. 10 FEET W OF THE E FENCE OF THE FIELD. AND 15 FEET SW OF THE CENTER LINE OF THE ROAD. THE MARK PROJECTS 4 INCHES. REFERENCE MARK NO.2 IS NW OF THE STATION. 18.5 FEET N OF THE CENTER LINE OF THE ROAD. 55 FEET WSW OF AN APPLE TREE. AND 80 FEET NW OF THE SMALL ELM. THE MARK PROJECTS 5 INCHES. THE AZIMUTH MARK IS WNW OF THE STATION IN THE SAME FIELD. IT IS 6 FEET ESE OF TELEPHONE POLE 223-41. 1 FOOT S OF THE S ROW FENCE AND 18 FEET S OF THE CENTER LINE OF THE ROAD. IT PROJECTS 5 INCHES. TO REACH FROM SHARPSTOWN, A VILLAGE ON U.S. HIGHWAY 40, GO SW ON THE SALEM ROAD 1.9 MILES AND TURN SHARP LEFT AT A CROSSROADS WITH A SCHOOL IN THE SW ANGLE. GO E ON THIS ROAD 0.4 MILE TO THE TOP OF THE GRADE AND THE STATION. STATION ACTON IS SUPPOSED TO BE IN THIS LOCALITY, BUT COULD NOT BE FOUND.

RECOVERY NOTE BY COAST AND GEODETIC SURVEY 1946 (ELJ) DISTANCES TO RMS WERE MEASURED AND FOUND TO BE CORRECT. THE FOLLOWING CHANGES HAVE OCCURRED WHICH MAKE THE ORIGINAL DESCRIPTION INADEQUATE FOR PRESENT DAY RECOVERY. 37 FEET SSW OF THE CENTER LINE IS NOW 27.4 FEET. THE FENCE MENTIONED, HAS BEEN REMOVED. THE CHERRY TREE, ELM TREE, POLE 223-35, POLE 223-41 AND APPLE TREE NO LONGER EXIST. THERE IS NOW A PAVED ROAD OVER THE LOCATION OF RM 1. IT IS RECOMMENDED IT BE CONSIDERED AS LOST. A COMPLETE NEW DESCRIPTION IS AS FOLLOWS-- LOCATED ON LAND OWNED BY RAY S. WARE, ABOUT 6 MILES NE OF SALEM, 1-3/4 MILES SW OF SHARPTOWN. AND 3 MILES A LITTLE S OF W OF WOODSTOWN. THE STATION IS IN A CULTIVATED FIELD ON THE S. SIDE OF THE ROAD, 144.0 FEET W. OF POLE B.T. CO. 223-26-S, 117.5 FEET N.W. OF POLE B.T.CO. 26, 71.0 FEET. SE OF POLE BT CO. 27.4 FEET S.S.W. OF THE CENTERLINE OF THE ROAD, AND PROJECTS 4 INCHES ABOVE GROUND. REFERENCE MARK NO. 2 51.2 FT. NNW OF POLE 27 AND IS 21.8 FT. N. OF THE CENTERLINE OF THE ROAD AND PROJECTS 5 INCHES ABOVE GROUND. THE AZIMUTH MARK IS .2 MILES W.N.W. OF STATION ON THE SAME SIDE OF ROAD AS STATION, 178.3 FT. E.S.E. OF POLE 32, 23.0 FT. W.N.W. OF POLE 31, 18.5 FT. S. OF CENTERLINE OF THE ROAD AND PROJECTS 12 INCHES ABOVE GROUND. TO REACH SHARPTOWN, A VILLAGE ON U.S., HIGHWAY 40, GO SW ON THE SALEM ROAD 1.9 MILE AND TURN SHARP LEFT AT A CROSSROADS WITH A SCHOOL IN THE SW ANGLE. GO E. ON THIS ROAD 0.4 MILE TO THE TOP OR THE GRADE AND THE STATION.

RECOVERY NOTE BY COAST AND GEODETIC SURVEY 1958 (JEG) STATION AND REFERENCE MARK 2 WERE FOUND IN GOOD CONDITION. REFERENCE MARK 1 HAD BEEN DESTROYED. THE AZIMUTH MARK WAS FOUND IN A ROAD BAR DITCH. IT WAS DESTROYED AND A NEW AZIMUTH MARK AND REFERENCE MARK WERE SET FOR THE STATION. THE STATION MARK WAS NOT OBSERVED FROM BECAUSE THERE IS A TELEPHONE LINE DIRECTLY UP OVER THE MARK. R.M. 2 WAS OBSERVED FROM AS THE STATION.

THE DESCRIPTION OF 1933 AND 1946 WERE INADEQUATE. A NEW DESCRIPTION FOLLOWS. THE STATION IS ON LAND OWNED BY HELEN AND JAMES RATHBONE AT PHONE NUMBER (609)769-0993. TO REACH THE STATION FROM THE JUNCTION OF ROUTE 620 (OLD KINGS HIGHWAY) AND ROUTE 40 IN THE TOWN OF SHARPTOWN GO SOUTH FOR 2.17 KM (1.35 MI) ON ROUTE 620 TO THE INTERSECTION OF WARNER ROAD. CONTINUE STRAIGHT AHEAD AND GO SOUTH FOR 1.05 KM (0.65 MI) ON ROUTE 620 TO THE INTERSECTION OF HAYNES NECK ROAD. TURN LEFT AND GO EAST FOR 0.64 KM (0.4 MI) ON HAYNES NECK ROAD TO THE STATION ON THE RIGHT. STATION IS LOCATED 1.2 METERS (4 FEET) SOUTH FROM A CARSONITE WITNESS POST, 5.12 METERS (16.8 FEET) SOUTH FROM THE SOUTH EDGE OF HAYNES NECK ROAD. ACTON 2 RM 2 IS LOCATED 0.3 METERS (1 FEET) SOUTH FROM A CARSONITE WITNESS POST. ACTON 2 NO. 3 IS LOCATED 0.3 METERS (1 FEET) NORTH FROM A CARSONITE WITNESS POST.

OWNERSHIP--UNKNOWN. TO REACH THE STATION FROM THE JUNCTION OF STATE HIGHWAY 40 AND KINGS HIGHWAY (COUNTY ROAD 620) AT A TRAFFIC LIGHT AND COASTAL SERVICE STATION IN SHARPTOWN, GO SOUTHWEST ON KINGS HIGHWAY FOR 3.2 KM (2.0 MI) TO THE JUNCTION OF HAYNES NECK ROAD (NOT MARKED), TURN LEFT ON HAYNES NECK ROAD FOR 0.64 KM (0.40 MI) TO THE STATION ON THE RIGHT ABOUT 1.8 M (5.9 FT) ABOVE THE ROAD. TO REACH THE STATION FROM THE INTERSECTION OF U.S. HIGHWAY 40 AND STATE HIGHWAY 45, JSUT SOUTHWEST OF THE BOROUGH OF WOODSTOWN, GO SOUTH ON STATE HIGHWAY 45 FOR 2.0 MI (3.22 KM) TO THE JUNCTION WITH HAINES NECK ROAD, COUNTY ROAD 631, ON THE RIGHT, JUST PAST THE COUNTY VOCATIONAL TECHNICAL EDUCATION CENTER. TURN RIGHT ON HAINES NECK ROAD AND GO WEST FOR 1.2 MI (1.93 KM) TO THE STATION ON THE LEFT. THE STATION IS A STANDARD DISK , STAMPED ACTON 2 1933, AND SET IN THE TOP OF A CONCRETE MONUMENT ABOUT 0.5 FT (0.15 M) BELOW THE GROUND. NO TIE MEASUREMENTS WERE MADE AT THIS TIME.

  • The horizontal coordinates were established by GPS observations and adjusted by the National Geodetic Survey in July 1997.
  • The orthometric height was determined by GPS observations and a high-resolution geoid model.
  • The X, Y, and Z were computed from the position and the ellipsoidal ht.
  • The Laplace correction was computed from DEFLEC99 derived deflections.
  • The ellipsoidal height was determined by GPS observations and is referenced to NAD 83.
  • The geoid height was determined by GEOID99.
