Discovered while touring the area.

This rivet benchmark is in its intended location and has somehow survived public works projects over the years.

Had to walk through town this afternoon to pick up my car at a service station. As I neared the train station, I remembered to look for the pin so I could finally log it. For reference, the comments about the main track having been moved to the south and the old rails next to the station being taken up are correct. However, new rails have been placed where the original track was, but as a siding so the rail cars can be boarded right at the station rather than having pssengers hike to the west a few hundred feet.

This one was an easy find and is located where described. Concrete curb and rivet are in good condition. The part of the main track in the description has been removed, but part of that track can still be seen just beyond the train station (see photos). There is now a new main track.

Rivet can be seen in curb at lower right. The blacktop area on the left side of the photo is where the main track (referenced in description) used to be. If you look near the upper left side of the photo, you can see that part of the main track still exists, but this part in front of the station has been removed. (There is a new "main track" now.)

Like the man said...

This one is by a picturesque railroad station; the main track appears to have shifted to the south from previous description.

Candidate for my most boring benchmark photo.

Rivet is at foot of signpost in middle of photo. Station is now the office for Gettysburg Scenic Railway, a tourist train that goes up and down a track of approximately 20 miles...a fun (if sometimes noisy) ride.

Greetings Geocachers/Benchmarkers,

I found this monel-metal rivet with very little difficulty. It’s in terrific shape and exactly where it’s supposed to be. The monel-metal rivet is a half-inch or so in diameter, embedded in concrete--above the level of the sidewalk. It’s rather non-descript, and of course, is an alloy of nickel and copper and perhaps other metals.

Happy Benchmarking,
Ghosthunter

Control Text

  • The horizontal coordinates were scaled from a topographic map and have an estimated accuracy of +/- 6 seconds.
  • The orthometric height was determined by differential leveling and adjusted by the National Geodetic Survey in June 1991. WARNING-Repeat measurements at this control monument indicate possible vertical movement.
  • The geoid height was determined by GEOID99.
  • The dynamic height is computed by dividing the NAVD 88 geopotential number by the normal gravity value computed on the Geodetic Reference System of 1980 (GRS 80) ellipsoid at 45 degrees latitude (g = 980.6199 gals.).
  • The modeled gravity was interpolated from observed gravity values.
