I found this benchmark with very little difficulty. It’s in terrific shape and exactly where it’s supposed to be.

When I read the description, I was sure I wouldn't find this one. I drive this road enough to think I'm familiar with it, and couldn't for the life of me picture the building mentioned in the description.

Imagine my surprise as I watched my GPS slowly tick down, and the arrow slowly turn to point to the structure in question!

The disk is right where it's supposed to be (as is the building)

DESCRIBED BY COAST AND GEODETIC SURVEY 1942 0.6 MI SW FROM ARENDTSVILLE. 0.6 MILE SOUTHWEST ALONG DIRT ROAD 01071 FROM THE POST OFFICE AT ARENDTSVILLE, ADAMS COUNTY, THENCE 1.5 MILES NORTHWEST ALONG A DIRT ROAD THENCE 1.6 MILES NORTHWEST ALONG STATE HIGHWAY 234, THENCE 1.7 MILES NORTHWEST ALONG PAVED ROAD 01010, AND THENCE 3.1 MILES NORTHWEST ALONG DIRT ROAD 01041, 26 FEET NORTHEAST OF THE CENTERLINE OF THE ROAD, IN THE SOUTHWEST WALL OF A ROCK APPLE HOUSE, 1.8 FEET NORTHWEST OF THE SOUTH CORNER OF THE HOUSE, AND 1-1/2 FEET ABOVE THE GROUND. A STANDARD DISK, STAMPED N 159 1942 AND SET VERTICALLY.

Control Text

  • The horizontal coordinates were scaled from a topographic map and have an estimated accuracy of +/- 6 seconds.
  • The orthometric height was determined by differential leveling and adjusted by the National Geodetic Survey in June 1991.
  • The geoid height was determined by GEOID99.
  • The dynamic height is computed by dividing the NAVD 88 geopotential number by the normal gravity value computed on the Geodetic Reference System of 1980 (GRS 80) ellipsoid at 45 degrees latitude (g = 980.6199 gals.).
  • The modeled gravity was interpolated from observed gravity values.
