Not the most scenic spot for a benchmark I've ever seen, but I located it and all is well with it.

Found this benchmark on this sunny day. Carefully made my way to the yellow benchmark indicator and found this benchmark below it. Kind of quiet when here when I found this benchmark.

Found in the night amidst a field of snowy weeds. Precious photos and descriptions made this one easy to spot.

Found as described, disk and setting in good condition. A nitetime find made it a little more difficult.
Can't possibly add a thing to Tillamurphs log......it says it all.

Recovered in good condition. Did not look for mileage pole 21/42 and did not verify the 154.5 foot distance. Found the mark as follows:

Near Fairfield, along Symmes road, between Industry Drive and the CSX railroad crossing, 41.7 feet south-southwest of the painted center line of Symmes road, about 30 feet west of the nearest edge of a utility pole labeled 251 BT125 – 23E, at a sewage disposal outlet basin, set in the top of the east corner of a 3.3 foot square concrete foundation that protrudes 0.6 feet above the ground, 1.9 feet east of the center of a man hole, 1.8 feet northwest of a metal witness post with a yellow Butler County Engineer sign, and about 4.5 feet below Symmes road.

DESCRIBED BY COAST AND GEODETIC SURVEY 1947 3.6 MI SE FROM HAMILTON. 3.65 MILES SOUTHEAST ALONG THE BALTIMORE AND OHIO RAILROAD FROM THE STATION AT HAMILTON, AT THE GRADE CROSSING OF SYMMES ROAD, AT MILEAGE POLE 21/42, 154.5 FEET SOUTHWEST OF THE CENTER OF THE INTERSECTION OF THE ROAD AND THE SOUTHWEST RAIL OF THE SOUTH BOUND TRACK, 41 FEET SOUTH OF THE CENTER LINE OF SYMMES ROAD, 24.5 FEET SOUTH OF A POWER POLE, AT A SEWAGE DISPOSAL OUTLET BASIN, SET IN THE TOP OF THE EAST CORNER OF A CONCRETE FOUNDATION OF A FLUSHING TANK, 1.9 FEET EAST OF THE CENTER OF THE SOUTHEAST ONE OF 2 MAN HOLES, AND ABOUT 4 FEET BELOW THE TRACK.

Control Text

  • The horizontal coordinates were scaled from a topographic map and have an estimated accuracy of +/- 6 seconds.
  • The orthometric height was determined by differential leveling and adjusted by the National Geodetic Survey in June 1991.
  • The geoid height was determined by GEOID99.
  • The dynamic height is computed by dividing the NAVD 88 geopotential number by the normal gravity value computed on the Geodetic Reference System of 1980 (GRS 80) ellipsoid at 45 degrees latitude (g = 980.6199 gals.).
  • The modeled gravity was interpolated from observed gravity values.
