Ashallond and I found this one on our way to visit Mingo. Numerous sources of information on the building and the town can be found online, including Wikipedia. The building was built between April 1887 and January 1888 and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980.

The description is more than adequate to locate the mark. The mark is a chiseled cross located in the front face of the southeast corner of the building.

The USBM was found at the SE corner of the Grainfield Opera House just under the name of the manufacturer of the steel. The cross is harder to discern but appears to be about 1 inch above the space between the S & B of the USBC.

Very easy to find. The benchmark is located on the old Grainfield Opera House that was built in the late 1800's. The mark is in the lower SE corner of the building. The USBM mark is easy to see but the chiseled cross is a little harder to see. The Opera House is now on the National Historic Register and is currently undergoing complete restoration. We were even lucky enough to have a local come by when we were looking for the mark and unlocked the opera house and gave us a tour of the restoration!

Control Text

  • The horizontal coordinates were scaled from a topographic map and have an estimated accuracy of +/- 6 seconds.
  • The orthometric height was determined by differential leveling and adjusted by the National Geodetic Survey in June 1991.
  • The geoid height was determined by GEOID99.
  • The dynamic height is computed by dividing the NAVD 88 geopotential number by the normal gravity value computed on the Geodetic Reference System of 1980 (GRS 80) ellipsoid at 45 degrees latitude (g = 980.6199 gals.).
  • The modeled gravity was interpolated from observed gravity values.
