Found this while out geocaching with the Younghummers on our way to do a Utah Geotour. We camp up here at Rifle Falls all the time and are thrilled to not only get a cache, but also a benchmark! Love the twofers!!!

The Girl and I were out hunting geocaches on our first outing from Rifle. I decided to go for a two-fer (this benchmark and the nearby geocache) and found both.

I've been a civil engineer and surveyor all my life and finding a benchmark (of any kind) is a treat for me. This one was no less of a treat.

In great shape

The Mrs. spotted this benchmark immediately after spotting the nearby cache location, but before alighting from the jeep-o-lantern. Geocaching is so much fun with her; just take her close to the coordinates and BINGO, as they say. Who would ever think that a child bride from the wilds of Wyoming would turn into a geocaching machine, and after only 49 years of trying to train me to be the perfect husband. Sorry to say that the training exercise has not been very successful, yet.

Found while caching.

Certainly have to pay more attention and learn more about these benchmarks. Very cool! . A few years back we canoed the mighty Columbia River from the western Rockies in Canada to the Pacific Ocean in Astoria, Oregon with a great group of land surveyors.

Found at same time we looked for the geocache here.

Got it with the cache nearby.

Control Text

  • The horizontal coordinates were established by GPS observations and adjusted by the National Geodetic Survey in June 1998.
  • The orthometric height was determined by differential leveling and adjusted by the National Geodetic Survey in June 1991.
  • The X, Y, and Z were computed from the position and the ellipsoidal ht.
  • The Laplace correction was computed from DEFLEC99 derived deflections.
  • The ellipsoidal height was determined by GPS observations and is referenced to NAD 83.
  • The geoid height was determined by GEOID99.
  • The dynamic height is computed by dividing the NAVD 88 geopotential number by the normal gravity value computed on the Geodetic Reference System of 1980 (GRS 80) ellipsoid at 45 degrees latitude (G = 980.6199 gals.).
  • The modeled gravity was interpolated from observed gravity values.
