Grabbing a few benchmarks since they are not very many caches in fort Bragg.

Sure enough, reference mark 1 leads you straight to the actual benchmark disk! No evidence of the witness post mentioned in the 1966 description.

Since Reference Mark 1 is in the pathway folks are finding it easily and then logging a find for it on the Mitchell 2 benchmark page. Geocachers not completely familiar with benchmarking tend to log any marker they find to the nearest benchmark listing. We need to compare the disk markings with the benchmark description.

Reference Mark 1 is NOT the benchmark. To log a Reference Mark as found it needs to have its own page which this one does not. But the cool thing about a Reference Mark is that it has an arrow that points to the primary benchmark. Simply follow the arrow and you will find Mitchell 2. It's about 50' or so from the Reference Mark.

SURFACE AND REFERENCE MARKS ARE STANDARD BRONZE DISKS SET IN CONCRETE, AS DESCRIBED IN NOTES 1C AND 11C. UNDERGROUND MARK IS A BLOCK OF CONCRETE CONTAINING A GLASS BOTTLE, AS DESCRIBED IN NOTE 7D. HEIGHT OF SIGNAL ABOVE STATION MARK - 10 METERS.
