Very easy to find and in good condition, despite the coat of paint. At the Cross Island overpass by the entrance to Fort Totten, on the east side of the overpass and the Ft. Totten end.

Behind the walking stick

Yesterday I spent a long day in Queens, NY. I walked the "341" level line, surveyed in 1952 from "A 341" in Bayside to "K 341" at the Whitestone Expressway, with a side trip around Fort Totten and a little extra jaunt in Flushing. It was about 12 miles on foot and I was exhausted by the end. But I found 8 marks out of 14 (with about 8 others I couldn't get to) which is pretty good.

This mark was found in good condition as described. But like many of the marks I logged today, it had a heavy coat of paint, although the stamping can just barely be made out.

The mark is at the end of the long walk along Little Neck Bay, set on the wall of the underpass of Bell Boulevard under the Cross Island Parkway. I actually went under this underpass on the way to find KU1122, "D 341".

Control Text

  • The horizontal coordinates were scaled from a topographic map and have an estimated accuracy of +/- 6 seconds.
  • The orthometric height was determined by differential leveling and adjusted by the National Geodetic Survey in June 1991.
  • The geoid height was determined by GEOID99.
  • The dynamic height is computed by dividing the NAVD 88 geopotential number by the normal gravity value computed on the Geodetic Reference System of 1980 (GRS 80) ellipsoid at 45 degrees latitude (g = 980.6199 gals.).
  • The modeled gravity was interpolated from observed gravity values.
