Found on my walk through Astoria.

Took a chance on the weather and went for a walk in Queens. This is the first of three BMs found before the heavy rains began this evening- I just got home in time!

The description was adequate. The coordinates put this on the pier on 19th St., when the location is the 21st St. pier, on the west side of the street. I missed it last time because I did not read the description, and only mapped it on Gmaps. I should know better, sometimes these scaled coordinates can be off by quite a bit.

another day another benchmark.

Found as described in good condition. I had to stick my arm through the fence to get a picture of the disk.

Control Text

  • The horizontal coordinates were scaled from a topographic map and have an estimated accuracy of +/- 6 seconds.
  • The orthometric height was determined by differential leveling and adjusted by the National Geodetic Survey in June 1991.
  • The geoid height was determined by GEOID99.
  • The dynamic height is computed by dividing the NAVD 88 geopotential number by the normal gravity value computed on the Geodetic Reference System of 1980 (GRS 80) ellipsoid at 45 degrees latitude (g = 980.6199 gals.).
  • The modeled gravity was interpolated from observed gravity values.
