Benchmarkhunter is a great person to follow. Without the picture I would not have spotted the benchmark.

Found with lots of white paint over it, and buried under vines. Clearing the vines revealed the mark, which shows in the center of what looks like a parenthesis of vines.

Wall looks freshly painted. Completely covered and I was not able to make out the number on it.

Took a chance on the weather and went for a walk in Queens. This is the last of three BMs found before the heavy rains began this evening- I just got home in time!

I am starting to enjoy this.

Blue paint has been scrapped off.

This one was tough to see. I had to use the photos of previous finders to spot the subtle disk with paint over it. It is still there, still covered in heavy paint.

Cool disk find, but sure is buried under a thick layer of paint. I could hardly read anything on it.

Had to snap one of me in there! It's cold and hard to spot!

A close up of the disk buried under the paint.

2nd of 6 benchmarks found today with youngest daughter Lucy! Hard to read it with the blue paint covering it, but you could tell it was a benchmark easily.

Found as described in good condition.

The mark has a layer of paint on it, but with careful scrutiny you can make out the designation. The neighborhood (Astoria) is very Greek, and this paint job celebrates the national colors.

Control Text

  • The horizontal coordinates were scaled from a topographic map and have an estimated accuracy of +/- 6 seconds.
  • The orthometric height was determined by differential leveling and adjusted by the National Geodetic Survey in June 1991.
  • The geoid height was determined by GEOID99.
  • The dynamic height is computed by dividing the NAVD 88 geopotential number by the normal gravity value computed on the Geodetic Reference System of 1980 (GRS 80) ellipsoid at 45 degrees latitude (g = 980.6199 gals.).
  • The modeled gravity was interpolated from observed gravity values.
