Found at the end of the day and on a nice walk in this park. I approached from the east and scrambled down the east embankment to walk under the overpass and so to the mark. I would not suggest that anyone else due this- but I found it less steep. I srambled up the west embankment as pictured.

After 60 years of exposure to the elements (and by elements I mean road salt) the mark shows surface pitting, but is still legible.

Found as described in good condition.

The obvious way to go is on foot through Van Cortland Park from the west. I've included a map (which you can pick up at the headquarters east of Broadway near 246th Street). Cross the field to the northeast and follow the trail up and over Vault Hill. As you come down the other side, the overpass over the Henry Hudson Parkway is right before you. Don't cross the overpass but go around to the left and go down the steep embankment and the station is on the side of the abutment just a few feet south of the Parkway. Stay outside the fence and be careful.

Control Text

  • The horizontal coordinates were scaled from a topographic map and have an estimated accuracy of +/- 6 seconds.
  • The orthometric height was determined by differential leveling and adjusted by the National Geodetic Survey in June 1991.
  • The geoid height was determined by GEOID99.
  • The dynamic height is computed by dividing the NAVD 88 geopotential number by the normal gravity value computed on the Geodetic Reference System of 1980 (GRS 80) ellipsoid at 45 degrees latitude (g = 980.6199 gals.).
  • The modeled gravity was interpolated from observed gravity values.
