A beautiful setting for a benchmark. Found easily, on the eagle's left leg. The mural seems to have changed little over the years that it's been up.

5th of 6 benchmarks found today with youngest daughter Lucy! We weren't planning to find this one, but I remembered seeing it a while back, and since we were in the area finding a different benchmark, we came here too. Its in good shape, could see it clearly!!

Found as described in good condition.

DESCRIBED BY COAST AND GEODETIC SURVEY 1952 AT NEW YORK. AT NEW YORK, IN BOROUGH OF QUEENS, AT ASTORIA, SET VERTICALLY IN THE SOUTHWEST FACE OF SOUTHEAST GRANITE ABUTMENT OF NEW YORK, NEW HAVEN AND HARTFORD RAILROAD HELL GATE BRIDGE, 11 1/2 FEET SOUTHEAST OF WEST CORNER OF ABUTMENT, 21 FEET SOUTHEAST OF SOUTHEAST CURB OF SHORE BOULEVARD.

  • The horizontal coordinates were scaled from a topographic map and have an estimated accuracy of +/- 6 seconds.
  • The orthometric height was determined by differential leveling and adjusted by the National Geodetic Survey in June 1991.
  • The geoid height was determined by GEOID99.
  • The dynamic height is computed by dividing the NAVD 88 geopotential number by the normal gravity value computed on the Geodetic Reference System of 1980 (GRS 80) ellipsoid at 45 degrees latitude (g = 980.6199 gals.).
  • The modeled gravity was interpolated from observed gravity values.
